HONORS PROGRAM<br />

The History Department offers a departmental<br />

honors program. For a general description<br />

of the Honors Academy at <strong>Radford</strong>, see<br />

p. 81. For specific requirements of this department’s<br />

program, contact the department chairperson<br />

or the director of the Honors Academy.<br />

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES<br />

UNDERGRADUATE PROGRAM<br />

Interdisciplinary Studies is the required major<br />

for those students planning to teach early<br />

childhood education/early childhood special<br />

education, elementary education (grades PreK-<br />

6 option), middle education (grades 6-8 option),<br />

special education (deaf and hard of hearing;<br />

general curriculum). Students planning to pursue<br />

one of these programs can find complete<br />

details in the College of Education and Human<br />

Development information (p. 91). Other students<br />

who desire a broader major that cannot be<br />

met with existing majors and minors also should<br />

consider Interdisciplinary Studies, pursuing the<br />

liberal arts non-teaching option. Interdisciplinary<br />

Studies/liberal arts non-teaching requirements<br />

can be found below.<br />

INTERDISCIPLINARY STUDIES<br />

MAJOR, LIBERAL ARTS<br />

NON-TEACHING OPTION<br />

in the College of Humanities and Behavioral<br />

Sciences Advising Center. In their application<br />

for admission to the IDSL program, students<br />

must complete an essay explaining why they<br />

want to enter the IDSL program by noting their<br />

educational and career goals and discussing<br />

why their goals cannot be met by existing majors<br />

and minors.<br />

Core Curriculum Requirements 43-45<br />

In College Core B, all majors in programs<br />

in the College of Humanities and Behavioral<br />

Sciences are required to pass a second course in<br />

Social and Behavioral Sciences; i.e., CHBS majors<br />

cannot fulfill College Core B requirements<br />

with a Health and Wellness course.<br />

Additionally, courses used to meet Core<br />

Curriculum requirements may not be doublecounted<br />

toward the Liberal Arts Core, Concentrations,<br />

or B.S. requirements.<br />

Liberal Arts Major Requirements 48<br />

None of the classes used to fulfill Interdisciplinary<br />

Studies major requirements may be used<br />

to fulfill Core Curriculum requirements.<br />

Liberal Arts Core Requirements 12<br />

A minimum of three semester hours must be<br />

completed in each of the following areas:<br />

Humanities (ENGL 306, Professional<br />

Writing, or ENGL 307, Business Writing,<br />

are recommended)<br />

Philosophy (PHIL 112, Ethics and Society, or<br />

PHIL 113, Reasoning and Argument, are<br />

recommended)<br />

Visual and Performing Arts<br />

The Interdisciplinary Studies Major, Liberal<br />

Arts Option (IDSL) degree is intended for<br />

students who have a clearly defined educational<br />

goal that cannot be met by another degree program<br />

or combination of majors and minors at<br />

RU. The flexibility offered by this program<br />

should be aimed at accomplishing unique and<br />

specifically defined sets of learning goals. Students<br />

must submit an application for admission<br />

to the IDSL program. Applications are available<br />
