ENGL 449. African American Literature. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102;<br />

ENGL 300 or permission of department chair.<br />

Study of literature written by African Americans.<br />

Scope includes all genres and periods. Enables<br />

students to understand African American<br />

literature both in itself and within the larger context<br />

of American literature and culture.<br />

ENGL 450. Native American Literature. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102;<br />

ENGL 300 or permission of department chair.<br />

Study of various tribal literatures, including traditional<br />

oral texts and transitional and contemporary<br />

works in English by Native American authors.<br />

ENGL 451. Contemporary Literature. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102; ENGL<br />

300 or permission of department chair.<br />

Study of representative works of second half of<br />

the 20th century: American, British and world.<br />

ENGL 454. Literature and the<br />

Environment. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102.<br />

Examines literature concerning the relationship<br />

between humans and the environment. Study<br />

of landmark non-fictional works of an emerging<br />

ecological ethic, as well as fictional works<br />

that invite an ecocritical approach. They will examine<br />

how changing literary interpretations of<br />

the land have influenced attitudes toward nonhuman<br />

nature, and how cultural values have<br />

shaped our definitions of nature, our perceptions<br />

of it, and our interaction with the natural world.<br />

ENGL 463. Grammar and Language for<br />

Teachers. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102.<br />

Primarily intended for prospective teachers of<br />

English language arts, this course offer illuminated<br />

by the history and development of the<br />

language, by language acquisition theory (psycholinguistics)<br />

and by social dimensions of language<br />

(sociolinguistics). Required for English<br />

majors preparing to teach in secondary schools;<br />

recommended also for all students preparing to<br />

teach at the following levels: elementary, middle<br />

and special education.<br />

ENGL 453. The Female Literary Tradition. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102; ENGL<br />

300 or permission of department chair.<br />

Study of the distinctive literary heritage shared<br />

by women writers in England and North America<br />

from the Renaissance to the present. The<br />

theoretical grounding of the course is current<br />

French and Anglo-American feminist criticism,<br />

from which perspective the course traces the<br />

development of a women’s literary tradition<br />

in English and considers a number of issues<br />

pertinent to the study of women’s writing: women’s<br />

relationship to a dominant literary tradition,<br />

representations of female experience in both the<br />

dominant and the female tradition, gender and<br />

genre, and female creativity. This course may<br />

be used to meet requirements for the minor in<br />

Women’s Studies.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102.<br />

Study of major theories, methods, and techniques<br />

of linguistic analysis. Emphasis placed<br />

on application to the English language.<br />

ENGL 470. The Author in Context (WI). (3)<br />
