ENGL 472. Readings in Shakespeare. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102; ENGL<br />

300 or permission of department chair.<br />

Critical study of representative works of Shakespeare.<br />

ENGL 488. Final Honors Project. (2-3)<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102, senior<br />

standing, enrollment in Honors Academy, completion<br />

of all other Honors Academy requirements, a<br />

minimum 3.5 GPA in all courses and in English.<br />

To earn a bachelor’s degree with honors in English,<br />

a student may conduct research, and write<br />

a thesis or prepare for and take a comprehensive<br />

examination. In order to receive honors credit, a<br />

student must earn a grade of “A” or “B” for the<br />

final project. Course may not be repeated.<br />

ENGL 490. Summer Workshop. (3)<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102.<br />

Designed to give students concentrated study in<br />

a specialized area of English. Grading on Pass/<br />

Fail basis but may be taken for a letter grade<br />

with the permission of the chair.<br />

May be taken twice for credit. Depending upon<br />

the topic, this course may be used to meet requirements<br />

for the minor in Appalachian<br />

ENGL 496. Senior Seminar. (WI) (3)<br />

Three hours seminar.<br />

Prerequisite: ENGL 420 and Senior status as an<br />

English major.<br />

The objective of this course is twofold: (1) to<br />

invite students of language, writing, and literature<br />

to participate in the theoretical debates surrounding<br />

the study of English; (2) to afford each<br />

student the opportunity to pursue a semesterlong<br />

research project culminating in a senior essay<br />

which focuses on an interest the student has<br />

developed during prior course work.<br />

ESHE 102. Aquatic Fitness. (1)<br />

Three hours lecture/laboratory.<br />

Prerequisite: Student should be comfortable in<br />

the water.<br />

Acquaints students with basic fitness principles<br />

and offers them a variety of aquatic exercise forms<br />

to help maintain or improve their level of fitness.<br />

ENGL 495. English Internship. (1-12)<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102, ENGL<br />

306. ENGL 407 highly recommended.<br />

Offers opportunity through experiential learning<br />

to apply English skills and learn about careers in<br />

business and technical writing or other non-teaching<br />

fields. Internship consists of placement with a<br />

business or governmental agency interested in utilizing<br />

the liberal arts background and writing skills<br />

ESHE 103. Conditioning. (1)<br />

Three hours lecture and laboratory.<br />

Develops basic understanding of the value of<br />

fitness. Various methods of training give students<br />

an opportunity to improve level of physiological<br />

fitness.
