CORE 103. Written and Oral<br />

Communication-Honors. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: Admission to the Honors Academy.<br />

Development of students’ writing and speaking<br />

skills with emphasis on logic and information literacy.<br />

Students will form and support claims, attending<br />

to the assumptions underlying arguments.<br />

The course will introduce students to elements<br />

of logic, including fallacies and inductive reasoning,<br />

and their use in persuasive written and<br />

oral communication. This course has been approved<br />

for Core Curriculum credit in <strong>University</strong><br />

Core A.<br />

CORE 201. Topics in Critical Inquiry. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisites: CORE 102 or CORE 103.<br />

Further development of students’ skills in critical<br />

thinking, including a rigorous introduction<br />

to informal fallacies, deductive logic and inductive<br />

reasoning. Students will also learn how to<br />

recognize, analyze, and evaluate arguments in<br />

written and oral communication. Students will<br />

continue to develop competency in information<br />

literacy as they read and critique persuasive<br />

writing and communication and create their own<br />

arguments. This course has been approved for<br />

Core Curriculum credit in <strong>University</strong> Core A.<br />

CORE 202. Topics in Ethical Inquiry. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 201.<br />

Further development in students’ skills in technology,<br />

reading, writing, oral communication,<br />

research, and critical thinking. This course includes<br />

a broad introduction to ethical theories<br />

and methods of ethical reasoning. Students will<br />

strengthen their skills in the recognition, analysis,<br />

and evaluation of written and oral arguments.<br />

Students will critique texts and create their own<br />

sustained line of reasoning regarding an ethical<br />

topic. This course has been approved for Core<br />

Curriculum credit in <strong>University</strong> Core A.<br />

CRIMINAL JUSTICE<br />

CRJU 100. Introduction to Criminal<br />

Justice. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Survey of the American criminal justice system<br />

and processes. Crime, criminal law, law enforcement,<br />

prosecution, adjudication, corrections and<br />

juvenile justice.<br />

CRJU 150. Crime, Law and Justice. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisites: Declared major or minor in criminal<br />

justice.<br />

Introduces students to key concepts in the study<br />

of criminal justice. Topics will include crime<br />

and social control, the role of criminal law, the<br />

nature of justice, and a survey of the criminal<br />

justice process. In addition, special attention<br />

will be devoted to the conduct of basic criminal<br />

justice research.<br />

CRJU 210. Juvenile Justice. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Covers the study and function of the juvenile<br />

justice system, the process within the system,<br />

and the youth who become involved<br />

CRJU 233. Courts and the Criminal<br />

Process. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

An examination of the steps in the process followed<br />

in most criminal courts and the legal rules<br />

relating to each step. The manner in which judges<br />

are selected in the American legal system and<br />

the organization of state and federal courts will<br />

also be examined.<br />

CRJU 235. Police and Society. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

This course is designed to examine the psychological,<br />

sociological, and philosophical role of<br />

the police as it relates to such topics as social<br />

conflict, criminal behavior, police brutality, police<br />

corruption, and stress.<br />
