LEAD 110. Emerging Leadership. (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Minimum of 2.0 cumulative GPA<br />
The course is designed to expose students to<br />
new perspectives on leadership and to encourage<br />
students to recognize their own potential as<br />
leaders. Through class discussions, readings,<br />
speakers and interactions, both on campus and<br />
in the community, students will be introduced to<br />
leadership theories, traits and skills. This course<br />
will encourage students to be creative leaders, to<br />
accept and celebrate diversity, to recognize the<br />
importance of risk and change and to see the potential<br />
in every person to be a leader.<br />

UNIV 100. Introduction to<br />
Higher Education. (1)<br />
Prerequisites: First year students and/or<br />
first semester transfer students by permission.<br />
This course will explore the meaning and<br />
value of a comprehensive liberal arts education,<br />
teach problem-solving and decision-making<br />
processes and promote academic success<br />
through selected readings, presentations, discussions<br />
and experiential learning opportunities.<br />
Students will learn and practice a variety<br />
of specific techniques for learning and self-management.<br />

New Student Programs/Orientation<br />
As new students arrive at <strong>Radford</strong> <strong>University</strong>,<br />
they will be supported by a variety of services<br />
provided by the Office of New Student<br />
Programs.<br />
Beginning with an orientation program for<br />
new students and their parents, the office provides<br />
support services to help students in their<br />
initial adjustment to college. New Student Orientation<br />
provides students with the opportunity<br />
to meet faculty, university staff and student<br />
leaders who will assist them in selecting courses<br />
for their first semester as well as acquaint them<br />
with the services that will ensure a successful<br />
first year of college. New students admitted for<br />
the fall semester are invited to attend a two-day<br />
orientation session during the summer.<br />
The office provides new students with<br />
assistance during their first year, including<br />
special interest sessions on a variety of<br />
topics. To aid students in their transition<br />
to <strong>Radford</strong> <strong>University</strong>, the Office of New<br />
Student Programs sponsors a one-semester-hour<br />
course called “UNIV 100, Introduction to Higher<br />
Education.” This course utilizes faculty, staff<br />
and peer instructors to help new students experience<br />
success during the first year and establish<br />
the groundwork for achieving a successful college<br />
career.<br />

Office for Academic Engagement<br />
and Community Partnerships<br />
The former Experiential Learning Office<br />
was recently renamed to reflect an increasing<br />
emphasis at <strong>Radford</strong> <strong>University</strong> on ways that<br />
all <strong>Radford</strong> <strong>University</strong> faculty and students can<br />
engage in real world work and project experiences<br />
that provide practical experiences and<br />
accomplishments for our students. Focused<br />
on the development of immersion internship<br />
experiences and community based learning,<br />
the office can assist students and faculty who<br />
seek local, state, national or international internship<br />
experiences. A highlight of the office<br />
is the Highlanders in Action Internships<br />
that are available both fall and spring semester<br />
for three or six credit hours. Students work<br />
in teams with community partners on projects<br />
related to one of five issues: environment/sustainability;<br />
social justice/diversity; health/wellness;<br />
arts/culture and economic/urban development.<br />
