SPAN 202. Spanish IV Intermediate<br />

Spanish Practice. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture and language practice.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 201 or placement by examination.<br />

A continuation of Spanish I, II, and III with<br />

emphasis upon communication. Intensive reading<br />

of simple prose. Laboratory practice required.<br />

This course has been approved for Core<br />

Curriculum credit in Foreign Languages.<br />

SPAN 211. Spanish for Health Care. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or four years of high<br />

school Spanish.<br />

Designed as an introduction to technical vocabulary<br />

used by health care professionals<br />

when working in this field and to the health<br />

practices and systems in the Spanish speaking<br />

world. Students are exposed to idiomatic expressions<br />

used when meeting a patient, dealing<br />

with privacy issues, etc. This class is not intended<br />

for native speakers. Students cannot receive<br />

credit for SPAN 211 and SPAN 311.<br />

SPAN 212. Spanish for Law Enforcement. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or four years of high<br />

school Spanish.<br />

An introduction to the technical vocabulary used<br />

by law enforcement professionals when working<br />

in this field and to law practices and systems in<br />

the Spanish speaking world. Students are exposed<br />

to idiomatic expressions used to enhance communication<br />

related to this topic. It requires active<br />

participation from the students and is taught entirely<br />

in Spanish. Students cannot receive credit<br />

for both SPAN 212 and SPAN 312.<br />

SPAN 220. Spanish for Heritage Speakers I. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 201 or placement by department.<br />

The first of a two-course sequence (SPAN<br />

220/221) designed to develop and expand the<br />

Spanish communication skills of Spanish-English<br />

bilinguals who have received little formal<br />

education in the Spanish language.<br />

SPAN 221. Spanish for Heritage<br />

Speakers II. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 201, SPAN 220, or placement<br />

by department.<br />

The second of a two-course sequence (SPAN<br />

220/221) design to develop and expand the<br />

Spanish communication skills of Spanish-English<br />

bilinguals who have received little formal<br />

education in the Spanish language.<br />

SPAN 300. Readings in Spanish. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or placement by examination.<br />

Practice in the reading of Spanish texts with special<br />

attention to the methods of literary analysis.<br />

SPAN 303. Spanish Conversation. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or four years of high<br />

school Spanish.<br />

Offers intensive situational practice of conversational<br />

skills. This class reviews grammar and<br />

vocabulary while focusing on developing the<br />

student’s ability to converse on a broad range of<br />

topics. It requires active participation from the<br />

students and is taught entirely in Spanish.<br />

SPAN 320. Advanced Grammar. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 202.<br />

Develops students’ understanding of the most<br />

difficult grammatical concepts of the Spanish<br />

language. Required of all Spanish majors.<br />

SPAN 323. Composition and Translation. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 320.<br />

Development of students’ abilities in composition<br />

in the Spanish language.<br />

SPAN 325. Spanish Culture. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: SPAN 202 or four years of high<br />

school Spanish.<br />

Presents a contrastive study of the cultures of<br />

Spain, with emphasis on the dominant Hispanic<br />

culture. Historical, political, and artistic events will<br />
