RELN 380. Old Testament Topics. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: RELN 312 or 202.<br />

Concentrates on one segment, a particular<br />

genre, or a specific issue, to advance the student’s<br />

knowledge and understanding of the<br />

Old Testament. Representative topics include<br />

law and covenant, narrative analysis of the Old<br />

Testament, wisdom literature, and the prophets.<br />

This course may be taken up to three times with<br />

a different topic each time.<br />

RELN 490. Religious Studies Internship. (3-12)<br />

Prerequisites: 18 hours of Religious Studies;<br />

junior or senior standing; minimum 3.0 GPA in<br />

major; approval of the department chairperson.<br />

Offers an opportunity through experiential<br />

learning to apply skills gained through the Religious<br />

Studies curriculum in a career-oriented<br />

atmosphere. The internship consists of a one or<br />

two semester placement with a business, governmental<br />

agency, or religious or service organization<br />

interested in working with students who<br />

have critical thinking skills, research and writing<br />

skills, and knowledge of issues addressed in<br />

the study of religion. Grading will be on A-F basis.<br />

No more than 3 credit hours may be applied<br />

toward the requirements for the major.<br />

RELN 381. Religion and Death. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: 3 hours in Religious Studies.<br />

Religion and Death critically examines a significant<br />

dimension of religious life. Death, the<br />

great unknown, awaits us all. One of the chief<br />

functions of religions is to ease the anxiety and<br />

pain of being mortal. How and how well is this<br />

accomplished? To answer, students will explore<br />

supernaturalist treatments of death across cultures<br />

and time, e.g., funeral rites, descriptions of<br />

hell, ghost beliefs, and Near-Death Experiences.<br />

RELN 420. Topics in Religious Studies. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: Three hours of religious studies.<br />

Provides an opportunity for advanced study of a<br />

selected topic in religious studies. Examples of<br />

topics to be studied may include Zen Buddhism,<br />

goddesses, and the letters of Paul. The course<br />

may be taken up to three times with a different<br />

topic each time.<br />

RELN 488. Final Honors Project. (2-3)<br />

Prerequisites: Enrollment in the Honors Academy,<br />

completion of all other Honors 424 Academy<br />

requirements, a minimum of 3.5 GPA in all<br />

courses and in religious studies.<br />

Project and topic to be determined by the student,<br />

the faculty member with whom the student works<br />

and the department. In order to receive honors<br />

credit, a student must earn a grade of “A” or “B”<br />

for the final project. Course may not be repeated.<br />

RUSSIAN<br />

RUSS 100. Elementary Russian. (4)<br />

Four hours lecture.<br />

A balanced emphasis on listening, speaking,<br />

reading, and writing Russian, and on the culture<br />

where this language is spoken. This course has<br />

been approved for Core Curriculum credit in<br />

Foreign Languages.<br />

RUSS 200. Intermediate Russian I. (4)<br />

Four hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: RUSS 100, the equivalent, or one<br />

year of high school Russian.<br />

Continued development of the basic language<br />

skills and of familiarity with Russian culture<br />

with a balanced emphasis on listening, speaking,<br />

reading, and writing Russian and on the<br />

culture where this language is spoken. This<br />

course has been approved for Core Curriculum<br />

credit in Foreign Languages.<br />

RUSS 210. Intermediate Russian II. (4)<br />

Four hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisites: RUSS 200, or the equivalent (two<br />

years of high school Russian).<br />

Review of fundamentals and continued practice<br />

in listening, speaking, reading, and culture with<br />

expanded use of literary and cultural materials.
