ENGL 409. Advanced Fiction Writing. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102, ENGL<br />

writing. May be taken twice for credit.<br />

ENGL 410. Advanced Poetry Writing. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: ENGL 310.<br />

For students wishing to develop potential in poetry<br />

writing. May be taken twice for credit.<br />

ENGL 420. Introduction to Literary<br />

Criticism. (WI) (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102; ENGL<br />

300 or permission of department chair.<br />

Survey of major texts of literary criticism from<br />

classical period to present; includes analysis of<br />

major problems of literary criticism and introduces<br />

dominant modes of critical thought today.<br />

ENGL 424. The Study of Children’s<br />

Literature. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102.<br />

Priority given to (1) IDSE majors and (2) IDSM<br />

majors.<br />

Course familiarizes students, particularly prospective<br />

elementary school teachers, with classic<br />

and contemporary children’s literature. Students<br />

study children’s literature by focusing on<br />

historical contexts, genres, evaluation criteria,<br />

media adaptations, selection aids and procedures,<br />

and book-related activities. The intent is<br />

to develop knowledgeable, thoughtful students<br />

who are skilled in using children’s literature in<br />

classroom or library settings.<br />

ENGL 426. Teaching English in the<br />

High School. (2)<br />

Two hours lecture<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102; admission<br />

to the Teacher Education Program. Corequisite:<br />

Junior clinical field experience or “blocking.”<br />

Provides instruction in the methods of teaching<br />

English language arts in the secondary school.<br />

Designed to allow students to explore studentcentered<br />

approaches to teaching literature and<br />

language, and to practice designing lessons<br />

and making long-range plans. Meeting two<br />

hours weekly, the course satisfies licensure<br />

requirements for English majors intending to<br />

teach at the secondary level. It does not satisfy<br />

English major requirements, but is a requirement<br />

in the professional education core.<br />

ENGL 428. Planning and Teaching<br />

Seminar. (1)<br />

One hour lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: All Core Curriculum requirements;<br />

EDEF 320, EDUC 440, 441, and ENGL<br />

402, 425, 426 and 463.<br />

Corequisite: EDUC 452.<br />

One-week planning seminar followed by weekly<br />

hour-long seminar meetings. Taken concurrently<br />

with EDUC 452, the student teaching<br />

field experience. All seminar meetings will allow<br />

students opportunities to collaborate on<br />

problems and planning directly related to the<br />

student teaching experience. Student may not<br />

receive credit if previously taken ENGL 427.<br />

ENGL 425. The Study of Adolescent<br />

Literature. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102.<br />

Familiarizes students with classical and contemporary<br />

literature whose audience is primarily<br />

adolescents. Students are led to understand<br />

why teenage readers make the literature choices<br />

they do. The course helps students develop a<br />

ENGL 431. Medieval Literature. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture.<br />

Prerequisite: CORE 101 and CORE 102; ENGL<br />

300 or permission of department chair.<br />

Study of major literary works composed in<br />

England during the Middle Ages (6th through<br />

15th centuries). Special attention to the works<br />

and language of Chaucer.
