ARTH 413. Baroque and Rococo Art. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture and seminar.<br />

Prerequisites: ART 215 and 216 or permission<br />

of instructor. Recommended: ARTH 400.<br />

A study of the styles and themes of 17th and<br />

early 18th-century Western European art. Students<br />

can not receive credit for both ART 482<br />

and ARTH 413.<br />

ARTH 414. Special Topics in Pre-Modern<br />

Art History. (3)<br />

Three hours seminar.<br />

Prerequisites: ART 215, ART 216, ARTH 316,<br />

ARTH 400, ARTH 401, and one of ARTH 410 -<br />

413.<br />

Topics offered might include a period defined<br />

more narrowly than “ancient/classical” (ART<br />

410) or “medieval” (ART 411) – early Christian<br />

iconography, for example – or they may approach<br />

the period from a focus on a key monument<br />

(Hagia Sophia, for example), key medium<br />

(illuminated manuscripts), or a social/economic<br />

topic of importance to the period.<br />

ARTH 420. Twentieth Century Art. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture and seminar.<br />

Prerequisites: ART 215 and 216 or permission<br />

of instructor. Recommended: ARTH 400.<br />

Study of the development of the visual arts of<br />

the 20th century emphasizing chronological<br />

evolution, themes, and visual forms. Students<br />

can not receive credit for both ART 428 and<br />

ARTH 420.<br />

ARTH 423. History of Photographic<br />

Media and Camera Arts. (3)<br />

Three hours lecture and seminar.<br />

Prerequisites: ART 215 and 216 or permission<br />

of instructor. Recommended: ARTH 400.<br />

Provides an overview of the history and invention<br />

of photography and the camera, an examination<br />

of issues related to the development of photography<br />

as a tool of science, historical documentation,<br />

and art; and the place of photography and<br />

more recent developments in digital and video<br />

media in the history of art. Students can not receive<br />

credit for both ART 451 and ARTH 423.<br />

ARTH 430. Whimsy, Outrage and Seduction:<br />

Exhibiting Art in the 21st Century. (3)<br />

Three hours seminar.<br />

Prerequisites: ART 215, ART 216, ARTH 316,<br />

ARTH 400, ARTH 401. Recommended: ARTH<br />

420.<br />

Beginning with the premise that the role of museums<br />

and exhibitions has changed significantly<br />

in the late 20th century, this course will identify<br />

exhibitions that both support and challenge the<br />

idea that museums have returned to their roots as<br />

cabinets of curiosity. In the process of doing so,<br />

exhibition protocols, exhibitions that have made<br />

history, curatorial roles, and the variables that influence<br />

curatorial decisions will be examined.<br />

ARTH 431. Special Topics in Modern/<br />

Contemporary Art History. (3)<br />

Three hours seminar.<br />

Prerequisites: ART 215, ART 216, ARTH 316,<br />

ARTH 400, ARTH 401 and ARTH 420 or ARTH<br />

423 or ART 430. Some of these requirements<br />

may be waived for BFA majors; check with adviser<br />

or instructor.<br />

A more in-depth exposure to contemporary art<br />

will be particularly useful for those students<br />

who intend to pursue an advanced degree and/<br />

or a career in museum studies. Topics will vary,<br />

focusing at times on an especially important<br />

movement in the 20th century, a significant artist,<br />

or more frequently, the impact of changes in<br />

new media on contemporary art.<br />

ARTH 499. Art History Capstone. (3)<br />

Three hours seminar and independent research.<br />

Prerequisites: Minimum of 33 credit hours in art<br />

history, including ART 215 and 216, ARTH 316,<br />

ARTH 400, ARTH 401, and required upper-level<br />

art histories.<br />

The goal of the capstone is demonstration of the<br />

ability to apply appropriate art historical methodologies<br />

to a research question chosen by the<br />

student.<br />
