625. Unidentified photographer pa n o r a m a o f ro m e f r o m t h e
Ca p i t o l i n e hi l l eight albumen prints, each 202 x 262mm, hinged
to later paper supports, lithographed titles and reference numbers
(2582-2589) pasted below, the first print titled Panorama di Roma
della Torre di Ora Coeli in 8 pezzi, bottom right corner of part 4
missing, a few very short repaired tears at edges of some prints,
c.1870-1875 (8) £1,500 - £2,000
*** Taken from the basilica of Santa Maria in Aracoeli at the
top of the Capitoline Hill. In the left foreground of the first part
is the building of the Stabilimento Fotografico dei Campidoglio
and the eighth part extends to the Colosseum. Details of two prints
are reproduced, uncredited, in V.Cianfarani, Immagini Romane,
1976, pls 84 and 102. The labels with titles and reference numbers
appear to be those issued with photographs published by John
Henry Parker but the present numbers in his 1879 catalogue are
quite different subjects. (Curiously, no.582 is a “General View of
Rome from the Monastery of Ara Coeli”.) The present owner has
attributed the set to Michele Mang ; another possible candidate is
the Canadian Charles Smeaton who photographed several singlesheet
panoramas for Parker.
