*** Bernard-Thadée Petitjean (1829-1884), missionary of the Paris
Société des Mission Etranngères, reached Yokohama in 1862, and
was named Bishop of Japan in 1868; he is famouis for having
discovered the so-called ‘hidden Christians’ of Nagasaki. The
official seal of the ‘Vicariatus Apostolicus [?Japonicus]’ is added
as proof of authenticity.
