*** Bernard-Thadée Petitjean (1829-1884), missionary of the Paris<br />
Société des Mission Etranngères, reached Yokohama in 1862, and<br />
was named Bishop of Japan in 1868; he is famouis for having<br />
discovered the so-called ‘hidden Christians’ of Nagasaki. The<br />
official seal of the ‘Vicariatus Apostolicus [?Japonicus]’ is added<br />
as proof of authenticity.<br />
