device, 2e4 blank, title and final f. foxed, occasional spotting,<br />
lightly browned, 17th century panelled calf, rebacked, corners<br />
repaired, [Adams C2616], 8vo, Paris, Robert Estienne, 1550.<br />

*** A rare Estienne-printed schoolbook with a good provenance.<br />
We can trace no copy at auction and it was not seen by Renouard;<br />
nor is it in Schreiber. Cordier was considered to be a brilliant<br />
teacher and held positions at Nevers and Lausanne. He taught and<br />
later taught with John Calvin. It was the printer of the present work,<br />
Robert Estienne, who persuaded him to convert to protestantism.<br />
Provenance: Elizabeth Armstrong (Estienne scholar); Delamere<br />

beginning, contemporary blind-stamped calf over wooden boards,<br />

lacking double labels, upper joint starting, but holding firm, spine<br />
