S e r m o n e, text in Latin and French, title with woodcut printer’s<br />

device, 2e4 blank, title and final f. foxed, occasional spotting,<br />

lightly browned, 17th century panelled calf, rebacked, corners<br />

repaired, [Adams C2616], 8vo, Paris, Robert Estienne, 1550.<br />

*** A rare Estienne-printed schoolbook with a good provenance.<br />

We can trace no copy at auction and it was not seen by Renouard;<br />

nor is it in Schreiber. Cordier was considered to be a brilliant<br />

teacher and held positions at Nevers and Lausanne. He taught and<br />

later taught with John Calvin. It was the printer of the present work,<br />

Robert Estienne, who persuaded him to convert to protestantism.<br />

Provenance: Elizabeth Armstrong (Estienne scholar); Delamere<br />

House, Northwich, Cheshire. (booklabel and bookplate).<br />

device on title with portrait to verso, numerous woodcut illustrations<br />

in text, a couple of leaves with repaired tears, some water-staining,<br />

mostly at beginning and end, some worming (affecting text) towards<br />

beginning, contemporary blind-stamped calf over wooden boards,<br />

verso of otherwise blank final f., a little marginal water-staining<br />

mostly towards end, 18th centuey calf, gilt spine in compartments,<br />

lacking double labels, upper joint starting, but holding firm, spine<br />

ends a little chipped, corners a little worn, rubbed, [Renouard, Des<br />

Alde, 165:11], 8vo, [Venice], apud Paulum Manutium, Aldi Filium,<br />
