which damaged, and 1 fragment, appended, 2 documents indented<br />

at head, folds, little marked, cancelled Bodleian Library stamps on<br />

verso, c. 80-165 x 275-315 mm., 1395-1509/10. £700 - £900<br />

*** An interesting group of medieval documents relating to a<br />

tenement in Broad Street, Abingdon, including a letter of attorney<br />

from Giles Newe of Southampton, dated 1447, witnessed, among<br />

others, by John Fleming, mayor of Southampton, with the town’s<br />

large seal of a sailing vessel appended.<br />

Gilbert de Clare, eighth earl of Gloucester and seventh earl of<br />

Hertford (1291-1314), was killed at the Battle of Bannockburn<br />

without issue. His very exensive estates were split between<br />

his sisters, the youngest being Elizabeth who married John de<br />

Burgh (d. 1313) and whose portion was the Honor of Clare. Her<br />

granddaughter, another Elizabeth de Burgh, daughter of William<br />

de Burgh, earl of Ulster married Lionel duke of Clarence, son of<br />

Edward III and their daughter, Philippa de Clarence married Roger<br />

Mortimer, earl of March.<br />

lines, remains of red wax seal, three small holes, browned, creased<br />

and stained, 56 x 213mm., 17th May 1429; and 2 others, another<br />

relating to Aure from the reign of Henry VII, and another, Suffolk,<br />
