spine in compartments, upper cover detached, lower corners worn,<br />

rubbed,[Adams F635], folio, [Basel], apud Inclytam Basilaeam,<br />

*** A scarce attractively printed work with a good provenance.<br />

Provenance: Andrew Fletcher, of Saltoun, Scottish patriot, political<br />

theorist and book collector (ink signature to head of title); Hadrian<br />

printer’s device to 2 titles and verso of otherwise blank f., m4, i6<br />

and c10 blank, woodcut decorated initials, some water-staining,<br />

18th century mottled calf, rebacked, corners repaired, [Adams<br />

B1042], folio, Lyons, Sebastian Gryphius, 1550. £750 - £1,000<br />

*** “Edition magnifique, imprimée en très grands caractères, et<br />

dont la merveilleuse exécution typographique ne sera peut-être<br />

jamais dépassée” (Charles Nodier, Bibliotheque Sacree Grecque-<br />

Latine, Paris, 1826). A good copy of this sixteenth century rarity<br />

with ample margins. We have been able to trace only 2 other copies<br />

at auction since 1980.<br />
