column, text in Latin and Greek, title in red and black and with<br />
large woodcut printer’s device, woodcut initials and head- and<br />
tail-pieces, a small worm trace turning into single wormhole to<br />
lower margin of a few ff., mostly first few ff., small area of waterstaining<br />
to head at beginning and occasionally thereafter, the<br />
odd spot, contemporary blind-ruled vellum over boards, spine<br />
in compartments, covers with arabesque centre-pieces, corners<br />
worn, lighlty soiled, a good copy, folio, [Paris], typis Wechelianis<br />
sumptibus Daniel & David Aubriorum & Clementis Schleichii,<br />

*** Scarce at auction. Dibdin considers it to be ‘A most excellent<br />
edition: the merits of which have been long known to the literary<br />
world’. The work also includes the military writings of Aeneas<br />
Tacitus. It was originally printed by Drouart, Casaubon’s printers<br />
in Paris. Drouart sent some copies to Wechel, who thought himself<br />
entitled to circulate them in Germany with his own imprint.<br />
