Regents Park, Seventh December 1842 Dear Sir [to Joseph Soul], I
am very much obliged to you for your welcome letter, and for your
kind invitation to me to visit the Orphan Working School. I shall
hope to avail myself of it... . It gives me sincere and true delight to
learn that the abolitionists are satisfied with the little I have been
able to do on behalf of their mighty cause. There is not one among
them who shrinks with a deeper anathema from the wrongs and
horrors of slavery, than I do from my soul. Faithfully yours Charles
Dickens.”
(2). William Hone letter reads: “5 Bolt Court 3rd December 1839
Dear Sir [to J.H. Treadgold], I desire to thank you for your kindness
in communicating to me that the sub-Committee of the B. & T.
Anti-Slavery Society cannot offer me for editorial services in their
new periodical a sum that would be at all adequate to the support of
myself & family, and that they must decline making any proposal
to me, unless some other provision for my support (which they
had reason to expect would be made) be previously arranged)...
