*** The scarce second volume of Restif de la Bretonne’s important
social history series Idées Singulières, which reached five volumes
and dealt with prostitution, the social functions of women, and the
laws of property, marriage and divorce. This work is principally split
into two parts; the first on theatrical reform, which aims to raise the
moral standard of performance and the second on theatrical history,
which through knowledgeable notes attempts to legitimise theatre
as an art and in so doing strengthens his initial reformatory ideas.
