social history series Idées Singulières, which reached five volumes<br />

and dealt with prostitution, the social functions of women, and the<br />

laws of property, marriage and divorce. This work is principally split<br />

into two parts; the first on theatrical reform, which aims to raise the<br />

moral standard of performance and the second on theatrical history,<br />

which through knowledgeable notes attempts to legitimise theatre<br />

as an art and in so doing strengthens his initial reformatory ideas.<br />
