browned and stained, folio, Wymondley, Herts, 23rd June 1592.<br />

*** Document attesting that Julian Lady Cotton has appointed her<br />
son-in-law Edward Cason as her deputy in the matter relating to<br />
the loan of £40 to the Crown, delivered to Sir John Brockett on 5<br />
March 1591. Julian Cotton held land in Wymondley, Hertfordshire<br />
is mentioned in VCH Herts (III 480-87). Edward Cason, who was<br />
of the Middle Temple, is named here as her son-in-law and appears<br />
in the Abel Smith papers in the Hertfordshire Record Office in<br />
1601-2. She may have been the widow of Sir Thomas Cotton of<br />
Oxenheath, and the daughter of Edmond Cave of London, and was<br />
later married to Edward Pulter of Great Wymondley.<br />

on vellum, folds, slightly yellowed, lacks seal, 297 x 397mm., 14th<br />

*** Thomas Harrison (1555-1630), fellow of Trinity College;<br />
biblical scholar; one of the eight Cambridge translators of the<br />
Authorized version of the bible.<br />
70. Cranfield (Lady Elizabeth, first wife of Lionel Cranfield, later<br />
Earl of Middlesex 1575-1645, d. 1617) au t o g r a p h le t t e r S i g n e d<br />
“e Cr a n f i e l d” to h e r m a i d “af f r i C K” at t h e i r lo n d o n h o u S e in<br />
wo o d St r e e t, 2pp. with address panels, n.d., c. 1613, sending a<br />
black box with half a sheep inside it and return it with the “tearse<br />
of clarett wine” and a “barrel of oyle”, and the box of glasses in<br />
the hall with the tub of anchovies and with a reply by “J Walker”<br />
?steward, torn with some loss, folds, stained and with tears.<br />

*** Before he joined government service Cranfield was a city<br />
merchant and a Merchant Adventurer travelling extensively abroad.<br />
It is quite likely that “Affrick” may have been a black serving girl.<br />
