clan issues, woodblock printed and occasionally ink stamped, also<br />

a few later bank notes, all stitched to album leaves bearing western<br />

ink inscriptions, numerous early postcards illustrating similar<br />

specimens loosely inserted, patterned silk cloth boards, rubbed,<br />

joints weak, oblong 4to, [mostly early eighteenth - nineteenth<br />

century]. £300 - £500<br />

*** Prior to the introduction of a central banking system in the 1880s,<br />

the equivalent of bank notes or paper currency were these ‘hansatsu’,<br />

issued by each ‘han’ or regional clan. Although this gave them the<br />

necessary authority to substitute gold, silver or copper currency, it<br />

meant they only had worth within their own issuing region.<br />

*** Morritt travelled in the Levant between 1794 and 1796 accompanied<br />

by James Dallaway and the artist Gaetano Mercati. ‘Morritt is one of<br />

the more interesting travellers of this period’ (Blackmer).<br />

tinted lithographed plates, some foxing to varying degrees, heavier<br />

to some plates, original cloth-backed boards, spine crudely<br />

rebacked, corners worn, rubbed, [Atabey 437; Blackmer 601],<br />

folio, Paris, 1853. £2,000 - £3,000<br />

*** This ‘Impressive work’ (Blackmer) eventually totalled four<br />

volumes and was published between 1853 and 1876. This first<br />

volume concerns Constantinople, the Bosphorus and Smyrna.<br />
