policemen are now picking maps etc. up in Kent!”, and that she “has<br />
been awfully busy” and hoping for some “peace & calm”, folds.<br />

back a short time ago... . What you are good enough to say about my<br />
books, but I did not quite understand your thinking that I didn’t visit<br />
Victoria when I was in Australia ever so many years ago. I was in<br />
Melbourne and went up country there and had the best of good times.<br />
Your P.S. and cutting, however, put matters straight and I feel better”,<br />

from Godfrey referring to Shaw’s book Immaturity, “in the preface<br />
to your book “Immaturity” you refer to a book by Alexander<br />
Mackintosh Shaw on the history of the Shaw family. A lady of this<br />
name in Ottowa is most anxious to obtain a copy of this family<br />
history... . Please excuse the liberty... in asking if you would be<br />
prepared to sell your copy...”, and Bernard Shaw’s reply, “My copy<br />
is the only one I ever saw. I won’t sell it, as it is my only authority<br />
for the statements in the Immaturity preface G. Bernard Shaw...”,<br />

and prime minister, as Chancellor of the Exchequer, 1867-1947)<br />

24th March 1935, declaring himself “a real cabbage” having<br />
discovered that he is descended from gentry in Shropshire and<br />
relating that he had gone to the church at Mumslow and copied a<br />
brass to one of his family who had given the church a silver flagon<br />
that the vicar had shown him and of which he has had a perfect<br />
replica made which he intends to leave to Trinity, concluding that<br />
his ancestors were “small country gentry”, that he is descended<br />
through the younger sons which accounts for the paucity of records<br />
and that it “is no wonder that I am a Tory with such roots!...”, slight<br />
