head- and tail-pieces, short repaired tear to verso of title and<br />

outer margin of N3, just touching a few letters without loss, some<br />

browning, mostly light, but heavier to a few ff., occasional spotting,<br />

a few small stains, contemporary calf, lower cover detached,<br />

upper joint split, spine worn and with short split at foot, corners<br />

worn, rubbed, [STC 14000; Cockle 65], 8vo, Adam Islip, 1595.<br />

*** The scarce first English translation of Trois livres des offices<br />

d’estat. We can trace only two other copies at auction since 1980.<br />

Includes sections on military tactics and law.<br />

blind-stamped calf, old morocco label to spine, [STC 21361], small<br />

*** A ‘seminal work of Anglo-Saxon scholarship’ (ODNB),<br />

also considered the best edition for the quality and number of its<br />

engravings.<br />
