40 portraits, 20 other illustrations, one f. torn with loss to portrait<br />

and adjoining text, little staining, stitched bindings in paper covers,<br />

marked, inscriptions on lower covers, c. 255 x 150, & c. 240 x 135<br />

mm., [early Qing dynasty, c. 1700]. £700 - £900<br />

*** Portraits of famous hisorical figures from the Western Han<br />

to the Southern Song dynasties (206 B.C. to 1279 A.D.), The<br />

larger vol. also contains ballads about each figure, with elaborate<br />

decoration including flowers, a mirror, gaming equipment, clouds,<br />

waves, &c.<br />

Provenance: ‘Sir Thomas Phillipps Bart. from W.H. Walcot, Canton<br />

June 15th 1859.’ Sir Thomas Phillipps (1792-1872), collector of<br />

manuscripts.<br />

331. War of the Spanish Succession.- l’en t r é e tr i o m p h a n t e d u<br />

305 x 355mm, text in Dutch and French, fine engraved portrait<br />

of ‘Charles III of Spain’ (Archduke Charles, later Charles VI,<br />

Holy Roman Emperor & King of Bohemia) with view of Madrid<br />

in background, a little closely trimmed, a few light marks,<br />

[Netherlands], [c.1706]. £250 - £350<br />

*** Rare. Charles declared himself King of Spain following the death<br />

of Charles II of Spain in 1700; both being members of the House of<br />

Hapsburg. However, a rival claim from France’s Phillippe, Duke of<br />

Anjou, resulted in the War of the Spanish Succession. The present<br />

broadside commemorates the arrival of the self-styled King Charles III<br />

of Spain on Spanish soil. Some five years later he returned to Vienna<br />

after the death of his brother Joseph I to assume the imperial crown.<br />

The war culminated with the treaties of Utrecht and Rastatt in 1713.<br />
