345. Russia.- [Münnich (Count Christoph von)] eb a u C h e p o u r<br />

stained and with a small purple pencil author attribution, *2 lightly<br />

foxed, occasional spotting, contemporary half calf, flat gilt spine in<br />

compartments and with red morocco label, a few small stains, 8vo,<br />

*** Rare. This Danish-born German soldier and engineer was a<br />

major figure in the military, engineering and political life of Russia.<br />

One of his first major achievements was to complete the Ladoga<br />

canal, for which he was appointed General-in-Chief by Catherine I.<br />

He was later made Governor of Saint Petersburg. During the reign<br />

of Anna Ivanova he reformed the Russian Army, created a number<br />

of elite military units and led the Turkish campaigns. Upon his<br />

return he entered political life and is regarded as the Russian<br />

founder of Philhellenism.<br />

late 18th/early 19th century drawings to margins of 5 plates and<br />

verso of final plate, mostly in pencil, some in pencil and ink, title<br />

with margins browned and foxed, some spotting, mostly marginal,<br />

plate 38 margins foxed, 20th century vellum, gilt, lightly soiled<br />

and marked, folio, [Rome], [Venanzio Monaldini], [c.1780].<br />

*** A collection of engraved plates after religious and mythological<br />

subjects by Carracci. This edition by Venanzio Monaldini (who<br />

also issued engraved suites after Carracci’s designs for the Palazzo<br />

Farnese) has the addition of Carracci’s initials within the platemark.<br />

This copy has several accomplished ink and pencil sketches in the<br />

margins.<br />
