Salnitrari, e Polveristi, broadside, 2 coats-of-arms, decorated<br />

initial, date and number added at head, lower corner defective, top<br />

edge frayed, marginal tear repaired, small hole in margin, some<br />

spotting, 355 x 250 mm., Rome, Stamperia...Apostolica, 1625; and<br />

4 other early printed ff., 2 from a large anatomical treatise with<br />

woodcut illustrations, and one facsimile f, (6). £200 - £300<br />

*** Scarce papal ban on makers of gun-powder and salt-petre,<br />

issued by the Camerlengo, Cardinal Hippolito Aldobrandino.<br />

Urban VIII was the last pope to extend the papal territories by force<br />

of arms, a notorious nepotist, a patron of the arts and an opponent<br />

of Galilei.<br />
