handsome large woodcut criblé initials, occasional contemporary
ink marginalia, lacking C2&5 and final blank, a1&2 repair to inner
margin, some wormholes, mostly to end, occasionally affecting a
few letters, occasional water-staining, again mostly at end and
mostly marginal, contemporary blind-stamped pigskin over wooden
boards, metal clasps, spine in compartments and with 3 later paper
labels, a few wormholes, lightly soiled and spotted, [Renouard,
Badius Ascensius, III, 175; not in Adams], folio, [Paris], [Josse
Badius for himself and Jean Petit], [13th November - 1st December,

*** A rare and important edition of Plutarch’s Lives. We can trace
only one other copy at auction (sold in 1983, lacking final blank).

verso of colophon f. with woodcut printer’s device, title soiled at
foot and with faded ink signature at head, small ink number stamp
to verso of title and foot of e1, occasional light foxing, mostly
marginal, a few small marginal water-stains, 18th century tree
calf, rebacked, corners worn, rubbed, [Adams B3101; Ahmanson-

*** On ancient coins and measures. Budé was held in high esteem
by François I and was a frequent correspond with Erasmus and

f., initial spaces with guide-letters, short repaired tear to lower
margin of u1, outer margins spotted or foxed, occasional spotting
within text, later calf, sympathetically rebacked in modern calf in
compartments, richly gilt, corners repaired, covers scuffed, g.e.,
[Adams S1134; Renouard, Des Aldes, 98:6; Censimento 16 CNCE
37706], 8vo, [Venice], [in aedibus Aldi, et Andreae soceri], [1523].

*** With an extra 84 verses in book VIII, which had been recently
discovered in France, in comparison with the Giunta edition of
1515 on which this is based.
