374. Wither (George) a Co l l e C t i o n o f t h o S e po e m e S..., fine<br />

engraved pictorial title, final f. blank, R5 lower corner frayed with<br />

loss of a few letters, [STC 25912], [Richard Badger] for Robert<br />

Allott, 1633 b o u n d w i t h Wither (George) Wither’s Motto. Nec<br />

Habeo, Nec Careo, Nec Curo., initial ‘Explanation of the Embleme’<br />

f., engraved emblematic title, lacking final blank, very short tear to<br />

foot of ‘explanation’ f., touching part of 2 letters, with no real loss,<br />

[STC 25912, but with earlier engraved title], [[Thomas Harper]<br />

for John Grismond], [1633], both works trimmed at outer margin,<br />

just within image of title pages, affecting a number of catchwords<br />

and occasionally just touching main body of text with minor<br />

loss, occasional spotting, final few ff. of second work with some<br />

soiling, contemporary calf, rebacked, preserving original backstrip<br />

with a little loss to ends, modern gilt title to spine, rubbed, 12mo<br />

*** Both works are scarce. The second work collates to the 1633<br />

edition, but with an engraved emblematic title from one of the 1621<br />

editions. Withers was a poet, pamphleteer and satirist, who was<br />

imprisoned several times for libel.<br />

375. Guillim (John) a diSplay o f he r a l d r i e, third edition, woodcut<br />

coats of arms, a few ffull-page, m o S t h a n d-C o l o u r e d, title laid<br />

down, V3-X2 stained (4ff.), a few arms reapired due to weakening<br />

of paper by colouring, 3 or 4 of small arms with small holes<br />

caused by colouring, affecting a few letters recto, contemporary<br />

calf, rebacked, upper joint splitting, rubbed, [STC 12503], folio,<br />

Thomas Cotes for Jacob Blome, 1638 b o u n d w i t h Guillim (John)<br />

A most exact alphabeticall table, for the more speedy finding out<br />

of all their names and sirnames, whose coat-armes are contained in<br />

Guillim his Display of Heraldry, lacking final blank, John Raworth,<br />

for Laurence Blaikelock, 1640. £300 - £400<br />

with woodcut vignette, N.T. title in woodcut border, woodcuts in the<br />

text, ruled in red throughout, lacks O.T. title, and DD 4/5, replaced<br />

by 2 ff. from a later 8vo edition, N.T. torn and repaired with slight<br />

loss to border, A6, D6, NN4, Aaa2 & Eee8 torn with loss, other<br />

tears, mostly marginal, some fore-edge margins trimmed, touching<br />

side-notes, browned & marked, Hawk family information on blank<br />

f. before N.T., and on detached f., preceded by imperfect Book of<br />

Common Prayer and followed by imperfect Booke of Psalmes,<br />

remains of old panelled calf binding, worn, backstrip missing, front<br />

cover board without calf, [STC 2174; Herbert 248], 4to, Deputies<br />

of Chrsitopher Barker, 1599 [but probably Amsterdam, 1640].<br />
