to JoSeph bo n o m i, 4pp. with address panel, sm. 4to, “Lartington<br />
near Barnard Castle Yorkshire”, 23rd June 1802, thanking him for<br />
forwarding a letter from Marchetti, “I have very frequently heard<br />
of you Dr. Sir from our common friend, my near neighbour Mr.<br />
Coghlan of Cliff, & I am happy to cultivate so valuable<br />
an acquaintance. Mr. Maire my Patron wishes much to make<br />
acquaintance with you, & should you ever be able to in your northern<br />
excursion to take Lartington in your line, you would add a great<br />
favour to us both, & gratify your exquisite taste for architecture<br />
with a sight of y most beautiful, correct & chaste Gothic... Chapel<br />
in England not excepting my friend’s at Winton”, and reporting on<br />
Marchetti’s description of himself as “an emigrant French Priest<br />
residing in London”, tears where opened, folds, slightly browned;<br />
and 8 other pieces including 2 small watercolours, v.s., v.d. (9).<br />

*** Giulio Marchetti, one of Garibaldi’s redshirts, moved to<br />
Halifax and became manager and then chairman of Crossley’s<br />
carpet works.<br />
115. Pitt (William, politician, prime minister, 1759-1806) le t t e r<br />
S i g n e d to t h e re v. mi C h e l l, bu C K l a n d, bu n t i n g f o r d, he rt S., 2pp.,<br />
sm. 4to, York Place, 10th May 1804, informing him that he has<br />
been appointed to the government as, “First Commissioner of the<br />
Treasury, my seat in Parliament will become vacant. It will afford<br />
me the greatest satisfaction if the University of Cambridge should<br />
be inclined on this occasion to honor me with a fresh mark of their<br />
continued partiality and good opinion, by again electing me as their<br />
Representative; and I beg leave to request your concurrence and<br />
support, should any prospect arise of an opposition, I shall take<br />
the liberty of troubling you with a further application”, typed slip:<br />
“Presented to the University Pitt Club 1st June, 1947, by Clement<br />
Cobbold Esq.”, tape in margins where removed from an album,<br />

119. Forbes (James Ochoncar, eighteenth Lord Forbes, army<br />

sm. 4to, Cork, 30th October 1815, regarding an émigré volunteer,<br />
“I am induced to mention to you the name & situation of an officer,<br />
lately belonging to the Chasseurs Britanniques, in the hope that<br />
as the above Corps was in your agency, you will be disposed to<br />
contribute your aid and to put him in the way of obtaining the<br />
object for which he has come to London, viz to be placed on the<br />
Pension list, on consideration of the severe wounds he received<br />
while serving in Portugal...”, folds, browned; and a small quantity<br />
of others, mostly indentures on vellum etc., including a 1699 Will,<br />
