broadside, woodcut royal coat of arms at head, right hand corner<br />

torn away, folds, [ESTC lists the BL copy only], mount, 380 x<br />

280mm., J. Basset [false imprint], [?1725]. £200 - £300<br />

*** “An appeal for protestantism (addressed to King George I) and<br />

against schismatic sects.<br />

Lot 96<br />

96. Recipe Book.- th e bo o K o f re C e i p t S, an n o do m i n i 1726,<br />

manuscript in several different hands, 54 pp. in two sections, both<br />

with contents list, and further recipes on 42 slips and 3 pp.folio,<br />

3 pp. decorated with fleurons, potted flowers, or small birds,<br />

contemporary stiff marbled wrappers, worn, in fitted case with<br />

related correspondence from Deval and Muir, 4to, 1726-[c.1775].<br />

*** According to Deval and Muir the book came from a member<br />

of the Walpole family. It comprises over 150 recipes, including a<br />

“quaking pudding” (which with additions becomes a “hedg hog<br />

pudding”); “a great Cake”, the ingredients including a stone of<br />

flower, 5 pounds of butter, 3Ω pounds of sugar, a pint of sack, half<br />

a pint of brandy, 2Ω pints of ale yeast, and 20 eggs; “a frigecy of<br />

chickins & rabbits”; “Alemode Beef”; “Lemmon Brandy”; and “a<br />

Pottater Puding”. Three of the recipes are Lady H. Berney’s, others<br />

were by Mrs. Wace and Mrs.Hamnallé. Some were apparently sent<br />

to a Mrs. Deb. Gibson, and one is on the back of a receipt with<br />

engraved pictorial heading for Woods & Compy., Mercers, at the<br />

Hen and Chickens in Chandos Street, Covent Garden.<br />
