title and 23 plates, some spotting, a couple of gatherings working
loose, later half straight-grain morocco, spine gilt, spine ends and
corners worn, rubbed and scuffed, [Abbey, Life, 423; Colas 491;
Tooley 123], 4to, [1820]. £500 - £700
*** Includes Owen Clancey the Frost-Bitten sailor, Joseph
Hill the Bell-ringer, A Fireman, Thomas Musto the Mat-Man
and the fabulous Billy Waters, the Dancing Fiddler. Waters was
an American who lost his leg in a sailing accident and used his
musical and dancing ‘talents’ to earn a living for himself, his wife
and a five year old daughter. A ceramic figure of Waters is included
in the lot.
