fiancé and later wife, Charlotte, “Dear Charlotte, I get up a few<br />

hours in the day time. I wish I was with you to take a walk with you<br />

and talk to you I should feel so happy that I should, write to me as<br />

soon as you possibly can...”, and describing one of his illustrated<br />

letters, “Following the custume of his own country, a sketch by T.<br />

Abbott, on the Bank of Mount Pleasant, Sholapoor” etc., i n C l u d i n g<br />

manuscript, 75pp., 15 engravings and lithographs, (14 pasted<br />

down and 1 tipped-in), 1 watercolour of a sailing boat with initials<br />

“FG”, 1 drawing, and a cut signature of Richard Knill tipped-in,<br />

1f. with hole affecting a few words, hinges a little weak original<br />

leather decorated in relief, edges and corners a little rubbed, upper<br />

joint broken, lacks head and tail of spine, g.e., most initialled<br />

and dated at Braunton, 8vo, Braunton, 17th February 1840 - 5th<br />

154. Cooke (Edward William, marine artist and gardener, 1811-<br />

80) au t o g r a p h le t t e r S i g n e d “ne d” to Ja m e S Sta r K, painter of the<br />

Norwich School of Artists, 4pp., 8vo, Barnes, n.d. [watermarked<br />

1844], reflecting on their days of regular meeting as “to an<br />

antideluvian world,” promising to show him sketches, pictures<br />

and plants , hoping to seek his opinion on what would be suitable<br />

for the Norwich expedition, “some have been exhibited in London<br />

if that is not a drawback” and reporting on his poor eyesight and<br />

his wife’s ill health, ink splash marks, folds, slightly browned.<br />

24th December 1844, as Leader of the House of Lords summoning<br />

him to the House of Lords for a new session of Parliament, folds,<br />

*** The signature of Wellington is almost certainly secretarial, yet<br />

the inscription “The Earl of Lindsey” is in Wellington’s hand.<br />
