few small stains, 17th century mottled calf, richly gilt spine in<br />

compartments and with a red morocco label, small nick to head of<br />

spine, corners of upper cover worn, [Adams M137], 8vo, Basel, ex.<br />

browned, a few small marks, contemporary vellum, 19th century<br />

black morocco labels to spine, lightly soiled, [Adams C679], 8vo,<br />

Basel, [Henricus Petri], [1561]. £650 - £750<br />

*** A good copy of Cardanus’ work on the uses of adversity. He<br />

divided his treatise into four books: the first discusses all kinds of<br />

adversity, and the preparation of the mind against imminent ills;<br />

the second refers to bodily adversity, such as deformity, disease,<br />

age and death; the third book refers to adversity in fortune, for<br />

example poverty, envy, exile, and prison; and the last book follows<br />

adversity through personal relationships. Cardanus was a scholar,<br />

philosopher, physician, mathematician, astrologer and gambler.<br />
