compartments and with a red morocco label, small nick to head of
spine, corners of upper cover worn, [Adams M137], 8vo, Basel, ex.
officina Isingriniana, 1558. £300 - £400
*** A very good copy of this scarce history of the Kings of the
Goths and Swedes.

browned, a few small marks, contemporary vellum, 19th century
black morocco labels to spine, lightly soiled, [Adams C679], 8vo,
Basel, [Henricus Petri], [1561]. £650 - £750
*** A good copy of Cardanus’ work on the uses of adversity. He
divided his treatise into four books: the first discusses all kinds of
adversity, and the preparation of the mind against imminent ills;
the second refers to bodily adversity, such as deformity, disease,
age and death; the third book refers to adversity in fortune, for
example poverty, envy, exile, and prison; and the last book follows
adversity through personal relationships. Cardanus was a scholar,
philosopher, physician, mathematician, astrologer and gambler.
