Merchandising Candy
For Summer Profits
creams and hard candies. Then there are
the coconut, marslimallow, licorice, fudge
nougat and caramel candies. Add to these
the variety of summer finishes given these
confections such as icings, granular sugar,
crisp sugar shells, and summer chocolate
coatings.
The buyer finds these numerous combinations
in wrappings and packages of all
descriptions, and in weights and sizes to
retail at all price ranges. He has many
choices in selecting the kinds which will
appeal to his patrons and fit in with his
methods of serving them.
CARE IS ESSENTIAL
Proper care of candies in warm weather
pays off not only in holding down losses
from spoilage, but also in affecting favorably
patronage at the theatre's candy counters
and vending machines the year around.
While children are neither as discriminating
nor as conscious of the condition
and quality of the sweets they consume
as their elders, these factors make a real
difference to adults.
Good care begins the moment the shipping
cartons arrive. It is not only important
to avoid crushing packages but is also
vital to store them in a clean, well ventilated,
cool and dry stock room. The stock
should be kept off the floor on shelving,
with ventilation space above and below the
shelving. These conditions are necessary to
preserve freshness of all types of goods.
The care of candy display cases and
other containers at the point of sale is
likewise important. Cases should be kept
clean and arranged to stimulate patron
appetite at all times. Sticky or off-color
candles should be removed as soon as they
show signs of undesirability.
Obviously, confections should never be
exposed to the sun when on display and
in the cases should also be protected from
the heat of electric lights.
Refrigerated show cases pay for themselves
in merchandising chocolate candies,
fancy packages, and nut confections. However,
in the absence of air conditioning
and refrigerated display cases, an electric
fan placed in a display case where the
doors are kept partly open, helps greatly in
keeping the temperature down.
MERCHANDISING TECHNIQUES
Selling candy in the summer calls for
emphasis upon coolness and refreshing
taste. The entire confectionery section
should reflect this inviting atmosphere. It
goes without saying that if the attendants
are pleasant and neatly dressed in white
or light colored uniforms, they will be an
asset to the setting.
It pays to change the displays often,
keeping them neat and fresh with touches
of summer colors, flow-ers, and attractive
display materials. Sketches and pictures
suggesting the cool breezes of the sea and
mountains can be used, when appropriate,
to enhance the overall effect.
Generous space between candies on special
display adds to the airiness and suggestion
of coolness where overcrowding
prompts a negative reaction in warm
weather.
Still, there is advantage in mass display
when featuring specials. Every season
of the year has its popular candy specialties,
which the successful merchandiser
exploits with enthusiastic showmanship.
The numerous summer specialties, ranging
from summer candy bars to transparent
packages in various sizes and assortments,
afford a wide selection for special promotion.
