theatre both visually and esthetlcally?
Carpeting naturally should give a sense of
pleasure from the use of harmonious color
combination and design, it should create
an air of comfort, give an appearance of
space, and serve to deaden the sound made
by foot traffic. The theatre owner will
probably select carpeting of the Wilton,
chenille or velvet weaves, for these fine
fabrics are constructed to withstand the
heavy traffic of many theatre patrons. All
these things are agreed, but where does
the theatre owner go from there in making
a selection? Each theatre has its own
special atmosphere to be preserved and
enhanced, or if you have a new theatre
you want to give it a very individual character.
As a basic part of theatre decor
the carpeting can contribute to your theatre's
own special atmosphere.
Carpet manufacturers have become increasingly
aware of this need on the part
of individuals whether home owners, apartment
dwellers or theatre owners to express
personality through decor. The homemaker
wants her friends to say "I enjoy
visiting the Smiths, their house seems so
cozy and friendly," or "Isn't the Jones
apartment lovely? It seems so cool and
refreshing on hot summer evenings." So
with theatremen who want to hear patrons
say "Hasn't Dillville used a lot of imagination
in his up-to-date house? Even on
Saturday night it doesn't feel mobbed."
Or, "I don't mind waiting for seats at the
State. That's such an elegant, comfortable
lobby." And it is no lucky accident
which makes the tiny Jones apartment
seem cool or the State Theatre seem elegant
and spacious. These effects have been
carefully planned by wise Mrs. Jones or by
the intelligent theatre owner, abetted by
manufacturers, decorators, retailers and a
large amount of good common sense.
To underscore this increasing awareness
of the role design and color play, the carpet
manufacturers introduced a special
collection of carpets called the Carpet
Fashions for '50 Collection at the 1950
Carpet Fashion opening this April. These
designs were in addition to the carpets and
rugs in their regular lines, introduced at
last January's market.
Each manufacturer-member of the Carpet
Institute contributed a conversation
piece to this collection which includes
fresh, new styles for every type of installation
from the most modest housing-project
home to the most glamorous of modern
theatres. The collection reveals the ver-
