CHECKLIST FOR ARC LAMP MAINTENANCE Any One of Several Trouble Points Can Rob Your Projection of Brilliance by DON SWANSON* Xn order to get the maximum illumination from any arc lamp, a number of things should be checked regularly. In the first place, the reflector should be cleaned each and every day and wiped off before each reel is run. While universally true, this requirement becomes an absolute "Must" when a new carbon is being "burned in," since it will release enough smoke to settle in a film on the reflector and seriously affect its efficiency. Carbon alignment should be checked to be certain that carbons are in line with each other and the aperture. When the carbons are securely locked in the jaws and brought together they must meet squarely. POSITION CARBON CRATER The carbon crater should be the proper distance from the reflector center. In the event you have no manufacturer's literature on the subject, here is a rule of thumb that may be of help: With the lamp on and the projector running, observe the light on the screen. It should be clear white with no shades of blue or brown showing. Don't move both carbons forward until this white color begins to shade, then move them backward and observe the color change. Adjust the •Projectionist, State Theatre, Holstein, Iowa. carbons to the whitest light and set the carbon image card. Should you still have a dark spot on the screen try removing it by a mirror adjustment, moving it either up and down or from side to side. If this adjustment removes the spot from the center of the screen and doesn't affect the image at the center, you know that your mirror and crater positioning is correct. If the reflector adjustment removes the dark spot from the center of the screen and replaces it with a dark border or corners on the screen, then your entire lamp is too far back. Both amperage and voltage must remain steady and within the limits of the carbons being used. Light cannot be improved by increasing amperage to the point that carbons are overloaded nor can any money be saved by burning carbons at less than the amperage specified by the manufacturer. Burning carbons at lowered amperage merely reduces the light on the screen. Projector lenses must be spotlessly clean for best results. They should be cleaned before every performance and at least once during the evening. The reflector should be polished and shoes wiped off also. Alcohol makes a good cleaning agent for uncoated lenses because it removes the invisible film of oil caused by dirty prints, extreme heat and fan action of the shutter. Manufacturer's instructions should be followed on newer, coated lenses. Since the shorter you trim the carbon, the better light you'll get, it's a wise idea when putting new carbons in to clamp down near the middle, being careful in handling to avoid ruptures. It is wise to check all electrical contact points for brightness. Any points that seem the least bit dirty should be burnished with emery cloth to avoid current reduction and loss of light in the lamp. Another source of current loss is through loose connections. A regular item in lamp maintenance is to check all connections carefully. Loose connections cause undue heat and will burn up either the terminal or the wire, or both, if not discovered in time. CHECK RECTIFIER CONTACTS Now to check the rectifiers: all contacts should be cleaned and any bulbs which have served their allotted time, even though they seem to be all right, should be replaced. Clean the terminal clips that fasten to the bulbs and blow out dirt to aid in cooling. In checking all the fuses, be sure you are using only the amperage specified by the manufacturer. "Over-fusing" is extremely dangerous, since it constitutes the only safety valve protecting your equipment. Carbons should be stored where it is warm and dry. A good move is to lay enough carbons on top of lamps or rectifiers to last at least through a full day of operation. This will assure having dry, warm carbons when needed. When carbon savers are used be sure not to crush or fracture the stub end when placing it in the holder since such breaks set up high resistance. It is vital to use graphite and not grease on the gears in the lamp, since heat will thin the grease to the point where it ceases to lubricate properly. Carbon ash should be removed only once a week since this deposit retards the destructive chemical action which eats the metal housing. Removing the ash also aids in cooling. Exhaust pipes should be kept clean, also. In closing, a good suggestion is for any projectionist to write for the National Carbons literature on arc lamp maintenance, follow the manufacturer's recommendations for your equipment, and don't be satisfied just to put on a show.
