Eleven merchants cooperated with the theatre in the Betty Grable double contest, each exploiting the picture and awarding gifts to the winner . . . The Metropolitan in Morgantown featured on stage the WSM Hank Snow grand ole opry. . . . Because Twentieth jubilee production of Mary Eliznb?th Fassig's Dance Album was presented for two days at the Capitol in Wheeling . . . Nine acts of "Clarksburg's Own Vaudeville" was featured for one evening performance at the Pierce in Bridgeport . . . Twilite Drive-In between Fairmont and Clarksburg has a team in the Cowpasture Softball league of threatening weather, the Luigi Boc- celli-Catherine Lucy Derace-Leila Tliomas recital, at Wheeling was moved from Oglebay Park amphitheatre to the stage of the Virginia. A 1949 ordinance establishing daylight saving time for Fairmont has been held illegal by Judge Charles E. Miller in Marion county criminal court, but the city is expected to continue on fast time for the remainder of the summer pending an appeal from the ruling. . . Rex at Wheeling moved up "Annie Get Your Gun" one day to open the film in celebration of We.st Virginia day. George Zeppos of the Rex went to Pittsburgh to meet Gloria Swanson and preview her return picture "Sunset Boulevard" . Parker at Parkersburg staged a free-hand drawing contest on Gregory Peck in "The Gunfighter," awarding gun belt, holster and gun; sombrero and scraf, and pirate pistol. THOS. Variety Benefit Draws Top Stars NEW HAVEN—Variety's giant charity vodvil show, held at the Shubert Theatre Sunday night (25), wound up with a star-studded, smash-hit program, including Robert Q. Lewis, Henny Youngman, Smith & Dale, Bob Howard, Sammy White, Horace MacMahon, Danny Shaw, Herman Distler, Three Arnauts. Mack Russ & Owen, Day Dreamers, Joan and Ernie Hayden, Miller & Perkins, Chris Autore. DeMay and Moore, and others. The local tent's project, the largest undertaken and enlisting weeks of intensive work throughout the state on the part of chief barker Ray Wylie. assisted by Sam Wasserman, Sam Germaine, Robert Eliano, Lou Brown, and many others was for the benefit of the Tent's "heart" program, at Boys' Village, Milford. Reports of the event have not yet been made, but all signs point to a complete success and considerable boost to Connecticut's commitments to the progressive boys' community building fund. Jimmie Fund Campaign Opens With Luncheon BOSTON — Martin Mullin, head of New England Theatres and president of the Children's Cancer Research foundation, entertained 150 guests, including executives of New England circuits and independents, at a luncheon at the Hotel Bradford roof on Tuesday (27) to spearhead the <strong>1950</strong> Jimmie Fund drive. Speakers at the luncheon were Mullin; Louis Perini. president of the Boston Braves; J. W. Farley, president of the Children's hospital, and several doctors from the research department. State chairmen of the Jimmie Fund drive, appointed by Mullin, who attended were: Massachusetts—Maxwell Melincoff, Harry Smith and Leslie Bendslev; New Hampshire—Connie Russell jr.; Vermont Frank Vennett; Maine—Lloyd Bridgham; Rhode Island—Edward Fay. and Connecticut —Al Pickus. J. A. Adorno Renominated To Run for State Post HARTFORD—State Treasurer Joseph A. Adorno. son of Sal Adorno sr.. owner of the Palace at Middletown. Conn., has been renominated by the Republican party to run in the November state election. Young Adorno. an attorney who has an excellent war record, is well known in theatre circles throughout Connecticut. Safe Used for 'Robber' SPRINGFIELD. MASS.—Angelo Sette. manager of the Capitol, put on a novel exploitation for "The Great Jewel Robber" a week in advance in cooperation with local banks. A safe was displayed in front of the theatre and cards with lucky safe combinations were distributed. Fifty dollars were given away daily, unless there was no lucky number, in which case the giveaway was added to next day's jackpot. U.S. Loan for Garage At Hub Step Nearer No. Reading Drive-In Leased by ATC Circuit BOSTON—The newly-constructed North Reading Drive-In on routes 28 and 62 in North Reading has been leased for a long term by American Theatres Corp. The 1.000- car theatre opened this week (30). Construction was started early this season by the Azadian brothers, who have given title to the lease. It marks the fifth open air theatre acquired by ATC this year. The 50-foot concession stand will be oblong in shape with two complete selling units. There will be two entrances at either end of the stand and two middle exit aisles with two cashiers for checking out. It will be of the self-service type. Hot dogs. French fried potatoes, coffee, ice cream, milk, cola, root beer, orange drinks, candy, popcorn and gum will be sold. The outside steel doors roll up and down like a Venetian blind curtain. Edward Frizzel has been named manager. M. C. Perry Appeal Rejected; Yamins Obtains His BOSTON—With the granting of a permit in Westport for Nathan Yamins to erect a new drive-in. the situation in that Fall River suburb has been cleared. Both Yamins and Manuel C. Perry had applied for licenses for drive-ins in that town. Later Yamins asked to have his application transferred to another spot on the main highway between Fall River and New Bedford, still in Westport. The former site will be used for a housing development. Perry's application was denied by the town selectmen and two weeks later Yamins received his license for a drive-in on the second area, a 12-acre lot. When the contracts are awarded, construction will start on a 500-car ozoner to be opened late this summer. Later it will be enlarged. The Yamins office is also interested in a drive-in in another location in Fair Haven near the New Bedford bridge, which he is planning to build in association with E. M. Loew and Lawrence Laskey. The hearing for the permit on this application will be held shortly. Ken Prickett Quits MGM To Join Phil Smith Firm HARTFORD—Ken Prickett, for the last three years field press representative in New England for MGM. has resigned, effective July 1. to become associated with the Philp Smith Management Co. in an executive position. His new duties will include supervising a division of midwestern drive-ins and publicity for the entire circuit. Prickett formerly was with the Griffith Theatres in Texas and Kansas and the Schine Theatres in Ohio and Kentucky. BOSTON—The proposed $12,000,000 garage under Boston Common, which theatremen in the downtown area have been awaiting ever since it was proposed several years ago. may come under a government loan to help finance the project. Governor Dever and Representative MacCormack journeyed to Washington where they described the plans to President Truman. Later, Dever told reporters that he understood the loan application had been approved by the RFC regional office in Boston and that it is awaiting action in Washington. The governor told the President that his chief interest in the garage was to alleviate serious traffic problems, but MacCormack said that the President expressed particular interest in its potentialities in the civil defense program. Under present plans the garage would be bombproof. When completed it will service 4.500 cars, a definite inducement to shoppers and theatre patrons. The downtown parking problem has long been a serious worry to the first run theatres in this area. WORCESTER C*rank Thompson, 79-year-old doorman at the Loew's Poli Elm Street, resigned because of ill health . Carroll joined the Playhouse . . . Alan Gray Holmes opened the Theatre-in-the-Round on the Speedway, giving Worcester its second summer stock company. Tlie house, built in amphitheatre style, seats 475, with $1.80 top. Managers Dana Kennan of the Orpheum and Raymond Bourgeois of the Uptown, both in Gardner, awarded passes to safety patrol leaders in the Gardner schools . . . Hall Shelton has gone to the coast to produce a film Dumas, former Worcester film theatre stagehand, is prop man for "The Happy Time" on Broadway. Janet Riley and Werner Klemperer. members of the Westboro Red Barn company, were married last week. He is the son of Otto Klemperer. musical conductor. John Flaherty succeeded Bill Regan at the Bernie Satz. manager of the Elm Street . . . Casino in Ware, and his wife went on a week's trip to Montreal . . . The Mohawk Drive-In at Gardner was opened . . . Ringling circus played to excellent, though not sellout, crowds here. The first of the numerous summer stock companies to run into financial troubles is the well-established Guy Palmerton Players in Worcester. Palmerton announced that he was losing $1,000 a week and would attempt to get the customers in by cutting every seat in the house to a $1 top. If that doesn't bring them in. he'll quit, he said. He attributed poor attendance to the tightness of money. A half-dozen other companies are operating in this area but he does not believe that's an important factor.
