Derivation of the Final Environmental Soil Quality
Guidelines
8.1 Agricultural Land Use
Both procedures (i.e., SQG SC and SQG I ) are used to derive soil quality guidelines for agricultural land
use. The lowest value from the two procedures is selected as the final environmental soil quality
guideline (SQG E ) for agricultural land use. If data are not available to derive SQG I then the SQG E shall
be determined using the SQG SC . In this case it is assumed that the SQG SC for soil-dependent biota are
a more sensitive measure of ecological effects than guidelines for ingestion by wildlife and livestock, and
can be used to represent these pathways. However, if data are not available to derive an SQG SC , then
no SQG E shall be set using only the SQG I . In this situation, it is assumed that these guidelines cannot
represent exposures to soil-dependent biota.
8.2 Residential/Parkland Land Use
The SQG SC is used as the SQG E for residential/parkland land use. If no guideline can be set, then data
gaps will be identified for further research.
8.3 Commercial and Industrial Land Use
The SQG SC is used as the SQG E for commercial and industrial land use. If no guideline can be set, then
data gaps will be identified for further research.
