a) The separate seawater <strong>in</strong>take, screen<strong>in</strong>g and chlor<strong>in</strong>ation plant, pumps, pipework and outfall<br />
system <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> power plant condensers can be elim<strong>in</strong>ated.<br />
b) A s<strong>in</strong>gle steam-rais<strong>in</strong>g boiler can replace <strong>the</strong> separate boilers o<strong>the</strong>rwise required with consequent<br />
sav<strong>in</strong>gs also <strong>in</strong> make-up water treatment, fuel storage and handl<strong>in</strong>g systems.<br />
c) By expand<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> same steam first through a turb<strong>in</strong>e to generate electricity, and <strong>the</strong>n us<strong>in</strong>g it to<br />
make water by condens<strong>in</strong>g it <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> br<strong>in</strong>e heater of an MSF plant, <strong>the</strong>re is a considerable sav<strong>in</strong>g<br />
<strong>in</strong> total energy use, Le. fuel cost.<br />
d) Common support facilities and services such as control room, offices, workshops, stores,<br />
laboratory, fue system etc. can be used.<br />
e) The total station staff complement <strong>for</strong> operation, ma<strong>in</strong>tenance and adm<strong>in</strong>istration is hardly greater<br />
than that required <strong>for</strong> a power station alone.<br />
Comb<strong>in</strong>ed steam stations produc<strong>in</strong>g up to 1000 MW of electric power and 470,000 TID of dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water<br />
have been built <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> Middle East to supply <strong>the</strong> needs of whole cities. But as well as <strong>the</strong> comb<strong>in</strong>ation<br />
with steam turb<strong>in</strong>e power stations, MSF plants can be economically comb<strong>in</strong>ed with gas-turb<strong>in</strong>e or diesel<br />
power stations, us<strong>in</strong>g waste heat boilers <strong>in</strong>stalled <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> stacks. For small plants though, one of <strong>the</strong> o<strong>the</strong>r<br />
available processes such as Reheat Thermo-compression (RH) or Vacuum Vapor Compression (VVC) is<br />
likely to be more economic.<br />
6. Special Txpes and Applications<br />
New ideas <strong>for</strong> improv<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> MSF process, both by novel plant designs and by hybrid comb<strong>in</strong>ations with<br />
o<strong>the</strong>r processes such as multiple-effect and vapor compression, are constantly be<strong>in</strong>g <strong>in</strong>troduced. Few of<br />
<strong>the</strong>se novel ideas have achieved much commercial success, largely due to <strong>the</strong> conservative nature of <strong>the</strong><br />
market. Big desal<strong>in</strong>ation plants are an expensive <strong>in</strong>vestment and customers tend to be wary of act<strong>in</strong>g as<br />
gu<strong>in</strong>ea pigs <strong>for</strong> try<strong>in</strong>g out unproven systems.<br />
Similarly, many <strong>in</strong>genious applications of MSF plant have been suggested, such as salt recovery from<br />
geo<strong>the</strong>rmal br<strong>in</strong>es and mak<strong>in</strong>g irrigation water <strong>for</strong> agro-<strong>in</strong>dustrial complexes. But <strong>in</strong> spite of <strong>the</strong> flood<br />
of studies and reports that swell <strong>the</strong> volumes of conference proceed<strong>in</strong>gs, more than 99% of all<br />
commercially <strong>in</strong>stalled MSF desal<strong>in</strong>ation plant is employed <strong>in</strong> produc<strong>in</strong>g dr<strong>in</strong>k<strong>in</strong>g water or boiler feed<br />
water from seawater.<br />
But this is" -not to say that <strong>the</strong>re are no successful advances <strong>in</strong> MSF plant design. Plant volumes are<br />
gradually becom<strong>in</strong>g smaller; new and cheaper corrosion-resistant materials are be<strong>in</strong>g brought <strong>in</strong>to use;<br />
operat<strong>in</strong>g regimes are be<strong>in</strong>g extended by <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>troduction of improved chemical additives. Although<br />
Reverse Osmosis is becom<strong>in</strong>g an <strong>in</strong>creas<strong>in</strong>g competitor aga<strong>in</strong>st MSF, <strong>the</strong> MSF process itself is benefit<strong>in</strong>g<br />
from <strong>the</strong> keen competition and is respond<strong>in</strong>g to <strong>the</strong> challenge by cost-sav<strong>in</strong>g improvements <strong>in</strong> design that<br />
will ensure a cont<strong>in</strong>u<strong>in</strong>g place <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong> market <strong>for</strong> years to come.
