BACKGROUND<br />

As one of <strong>the</strong> prime contractors <strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> U.S. Department of Energy<br />

(DOE) at The Idaho National Eng<strong>in</strong>eer<strong>in</strong>g Laboratory (INEL), EG&G Idaho,<br />

Inc. is presently evaluat<strong>in</strong>g potential direct uses <strong>for</strong> geopressured<br />

resources, as are a number of <strong>in</strong>dustries, firms, organizations, and<br />

educational <strong>in</strong>stitutions. In addition, EG&G Idaho, Inc. (hereafter<br />

referred to as INEL) is spearhead<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> <strong>for</strong>mation of an <strong>in</strong>dustrial<br />

consortium that would use <strong>the</strong> available energy <strong>in</strong> geopressured resources<br />

<strong>for</strong> multiple uses. Some of <strong>the</strong> uses under consideration <strong>in</strong>clude<br />

desal<strong>in</strong>ation, agriculture/aquaculture, sulfur frasch<strong>in</strong>g, <strong>the</strong> use of<br />

supercritical processes <strong>for</strong> detoxification of pollutants, br<strong>in</strong>e<br />

production, power generation us<strong>in</strong>g natural gas driven eng<strong>in</strong>e generators<br />

or b<strong>in</strong>ary cycle power plants, food and o<strong>the</strong>r types of process<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

chemical extraction, <strong>the</strong>rmally enhanced oil recovery, and o<strong>the</strong>rs.<br />

A broad based <strong>in</strong>frastructure of designers and developers are<br />

available to apply <strong>the</strong>ir expertise toward <strong>the</strong> application of hydro<strong>the</strong>rmal<br />

direct use projects <strong>for</strong> geopressured resources as a result of <strong>the</strong><br />

development of hydro<strong>the</strong>rmal energy. The use of hydro<strong>the</strong>rmal resources <strong>in</strong><br />

<strong>the</strong> United States (U.S.) <strong>for</strong> direct use projects was mostly limited to<br />

pool/health spa applications and <strong>for</strong> space and district heat<strong>in</strong>g be<strong>for</strong>e<br />

about 1973. With <strong>the</strong> oil price <strong>in</strong>creases of <strong>the</strong> 1970s, <strong>the</strong> DOE <strong>in</strong>itiated<br />

numerous <strong>in</strong>centive and technical programs that caused significant growth<br />

of <strong>the</strong> hydro<strong>the</strong>rmal direct use <strong>in</strong>dustry. These activities resulted <strong>in</strong><br />

numerous applications <strong>in</strong> agriculture, aquaculture, space condition<strong>in</strong>g,<br />

<strong>in</strong>dustrial uses, and various types of process<strong>in</strong>g (Lunis and L<strong>in</strong>eau,<br />

1988).<br />

In recent years, DOE has been sponsor<strong>in</strong>g <strong>the</strong> Geopressured-Geo<strong>the</strong>rmal<br />

Research Program, which <strong>in</strong>cludes <strong>the</strong> operation of three test wells <strong>in</strong> <strong>the</strong><br />

Gulf Coast area. On behalf of DOE, <strong>the</strong> INEL provides technical support<br />

<strong>for</strong> <strong>the</strong> assessment and evaluation of <strong>the</strong> technical and production<br />

characteristics of this undeveloped resource. One result of <strong>the</strong>se<br />

activities was <strong>the</strong> <strong>in</strong>itiation of an <strong>in</strong>dustrial consortium at Rice<br />
