ADMN 634 Investment Valuation (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ADMN 631. This course provides an in-depth<br />
exploration and application <strong>of</strong> valuation models to support<br />
managerial decision making in a strategic framework. The<br />
theory, concepts, and principles underlying the valuation <strong>of</strong><br />
firms, business/product lines, and mergers and acquisitions are<br />
addressed using extended exercises and applications. The primary<br />
model employed as a learning tool will be the discounted<br />
cash-flow model. Students will explore the financial drivers <strong>of</strong><br />
value, including assessing and determining risk, competitive advantage<br />
period, and sales and earnings growth estimates. Other<br />
valuation techniques using earnings, revenues, and price/earnings<br />
multiples will be discussed and applied in selected examples.<br />
ADMN 635 Organizational Leadership and Decision<br />
Making (3)<br />
(Also <strong>of</strong>fered with ADMN 625 as a cluster course.) The overriding<br />
theme <strong>of</strong> this course is that the ability to lead and make<br />
decisions in an environment <strong>of</strong> continual change is crucial for<br />
the 21st century. Thus, this course focuses on four aspects <strong>of</strong><br />
leadership: theory and re s e a rch, individual and team perspective s ,<br />
judgment and managerial decision making, and the global environment.<br />
Ap p roaches to leadership such as power-influence, situational<br />
factors, individual traits, and behaviors are explored, as are<br />
various models <strong>of</strong> decision-making theory. Issues such as the re l a-<br />
tionship <strong>of</strong> management to leadership, the value <strong>of</strong> part i c i p a t i ve<br />
and charismatic leadership, the leader’s role in organizational cult<br />
u re and organizational change, and the impact on diversity are<br />
i n vestigated from domestic and international perspectives. T h e<br />
i n c reasing role <strong>of</strong> teams in organizational life and the ability to<br />
apply good judgment to decisions that pertain to superv i s o ry,<br />
p a rt i c i p a t o ry, and team-leadership principles at appropriate<br />
points are discussed.<br />
ADMN 636 Cost Management (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ADMN 631. This course focuses on making d e c i-<br />
sions that improve organizational performance through better<br />
cost management. The need to improve cost efficiency is driven<br />
by increased global competition and investor emphasis on shareholder<br />
value. Cost management practices must be consistent with<br />
strategic goals and objectives. Cost efficiency can be achieve d by<br />
analyzing and modeling managers’ decisions on cost drivers.<br />
This course emphasizes a value-chain perspective, value-added<br />
analyses, activity-based management, and economic-value-added<br />
concepts in its approach to cost management. All topics are<br />
linked through an integrated perspective <strong>of</strong> cost management<br />
and through examination <strong>of</strong> the practices <strong>of</strong> “real-world” global<br />
organizations.<br />
ADMN 637 Legal Aspects <strong>of</strong> Management (3)<br />
This course provides a study <strong>of</strong> legal consequences <strong>of</strong> major<br />
issues facing managers in dynamic organizations. The nature<br />
and structure <strong>of</strong> the traditional American legal system and current<br />
alternatives for resolving disputes are reviewed. Issues such<br />
as employment contracts and reference checks, job descriptions<br />
and evaluations, employee termination, discrimination, age and<br />
handicap regulations, and substance abuse testing in the workplace<br />
are considered. Additional topics <strong>of</strong> discussion include<br />
union and nonunion environments, contracts, torts and product<br />
liability, business/white collar crime, and ethics in the workplace.<br />
The course is intended to prepare managers with limited<br />
legal experience for dealing with these situations before they<br />
develop into workplace crises.<br />
ADMN 638 Research Methods for Managers (3)<br />
Prerequisite: Knowledge <strong>of</strong> the materials covered in USCP 630,<br />
including data collection techniques, presentation <strong>of</strong> data in<br />
tables and charts, basic descriptive statistics, basic p robability distributions,<br />
normal distribution and sampling distributions, estimation,<br />
and hypothesis testing. ADMN 638 presents techniques<br />
and methodologies related to the evaluation and utilization <strong>of</strong><br />
organizational research and evaluation studies in making business<br />
decisions. Emphasis is placed on preparing the student to<br />
evaluate and utilize research-based information developed by<br />
other individuals. The focus <strong>of</strong> the course is on the analysis and<br />
interpretation <strong>of</strong> research-based materials in assessing the performance<br />
<strong>of</strong> individuals, work groups, and organizations. Areas<br />
<strong>of</strong> coverage include principles <strong>of</strong> good research design, measurement,<br />
appropriate sample size, evaluating research instruments,<br />
reviewing procedures for collecting and analyzing data, and evaluating<br />
and utilizing existing research-based materials in solving<br />
business problems. ADMN 638 provides the student with the<br />
a p p roaches and skills necessary to evaluate research-based materials<br />
and their utilization in business decision making. This course<br />
provides the student with various approaches to data collection<br />
(including the Internet) and utilization that best serve the practical<br />
needs <strong>of</strong> the manager.<br />
ADMN 639 Multinational Financial Management (3)<br />
Prerequisite: ADMN 631. Financial management issues in<br />
multinational organizations are the focus <strong>of</strong> this course. Major<br />
topics include the environment <strong>of</strong> international financial management,<br />
foreign exchange markets, risk management, multinational<br />
working capital management, and foreign investment<br />
analysis. The financing <strong>of</strong> foreign operations, international banking,<br />
and the role <strong>of</strong> financial management in maintaining global<br />
c o m p e t i t i veness are additional issues considered in the course.<br />
