UCSP 630 <strong>Intro</strong>duction to Research Methods (0)<br />
(Students without a background in statistics are strongly a d v i s e d<br />
to complete this course before enrolling in ADMN 638.) This<br />
course presents basic research techniques and methodologies<br />
used in organizational re s e a rch and evaluation studies. The information<br />
from these studies is used in making business decisions.<br />
Emphasis is also placed on preparing the student to evaluate and<br />
use research-based information developed by other individuals.<br />
The focus <strong>of</strong> the course is on applying basic research techniques<br />
to assess the performance <strong>of</strong> individuals, work groups, and organizations.<br />
Areas <strong>of</strong> coverage include principles <strong>of</strong> good data collection,<br />
presentation <strong>of</strong> data in tables and charts, summary and<br />
description <strong>of</strong> numerical data, basic probability and discrete<br />
estimation, the fundamentals <strong>of</strong> hypothesis testing, and the use<br />
<strong>of</strong> existing research-based materials to solve business problems.<br />
UCSP 630 provides students with basic approaches and beginning<br />
skills necessary to evaluate research materials and their use<br />
in decision making.<br />
XCIO 693 CIO Processes (6)<br />
First, models and simulations applicable to the information technology<br />
field are examined to identify the appropriate application<br />
<strong>of</strong> models and simulations to various strategic and operational<br />
situations. T h e re will be an in-depth examination <strong>of</strong> model and<br />
simulation input and output to identify the optimal use <strong>of</strong> the<br />
various tools. Second, there will be an examination <strong>of</strong> the myriad<br />
<strong>of</strong> laws and regulations concerning the CIO environment. T h i s<br />
will include a re v i ew <strong>of</strong> the Information Technology Ma n a g e m e n t<br />
Reform Act (ITMRA), the Government Pe rformance Results Ac t<br />
(GPRA), the Federal Acquisition St reamlining Act (FASA), and<br />
other laws and regulations derived from the aforementioned legislation.<br />
The application and implementation <strong>of</strong> the elements <strong>of</strong><br />
the various laws and regulations will re v i ewed. An end-<strong>of</strong>-seminar<br />
p roject will be developed and presented. The focus <strong>of</strong> the pro j e c t<br />
will be on the application <strong>of</strong> material studied during the seminar.<br />
XMBA 601 Overview <strong>of</strong> Management Theory, Strategic<br />
Thinking, and Global Management (7)<br />
This seminar introduces the concepts and theories that are<br />
essential building blocks <strong>of</strong> management thinking. Topics covered<br />
are systems thinking, the competitive structure <strong>of</strong> industry,<br />
technology trends, the future <strong>of</strong> organizations, and global challenges.<br />
These themes are incorporated throughout the program<br />
and further developed in subsequent seminars. Participants will<br />
have an opportunity for leadership assessments and feedback on<br />
presentation style and organizational quality.<br />
XMBA 602 Organizational Leadership, Management <strong>of</strong><br />
Human Resources, and Business Ethics (6)<br />
This seminar addresses issues that confront managers working<br />
with diverse populations in a period <strong>of</strong> rapid technological<br />
change. The focus is on managing human resources through<br />
organizational change, including understanding and affecting<br />
organizational cultures and establishing and maintaining an ethical<br />
climate. It introduces strategies and methods for aligning<br />
individual interests and organizational needs in order to reach<br />
organizational goals. Participants will evaluate how individual,<br />
group, organizational, and societal outcomes are affected by the<br />
nature <strong>of</strong> work and the perceived value and meaning <strong>of</strong> work.<br />
Through self-assessment instruments, case analyses, exercises,<br />
simulations, and discussions, participants will analyze and practice<br />
communication skills and decisions that motivate and effectively<br />
organize individuals and groups.<br />
XMBA 603 Marketing, Entrepreneurship, and New Product<br />
Development (6)<br />
This seminar focuses on business development strategies from the<br />
p e r s p e c t i ve <strong>of</strong> customer needs and pre f e rences. It introduces market<br />
re s e a rch approaches, product and service design processes, and<br />
life cycles. T h rough workshops, team projects, and case studies,<br />
p a rticipants will develop effective marketing programs that re c o g-<br />
n i ze the increasing importance <strong>of</strong> electronic commerce as a distribution<br />
channel.<br />
XMBA 604 Technology and Operations Management (6)<br />
This seminar focuses on the latest information technologies and<br />
operations management techniques that enable an organization<br />
to operate around the world and around the clock. It introduces<br />
tools that managers use to measure operational efficiency and<br />
effectiveness, including statistical process control, decision trees,<br />
forecasting techniques, expert systems, and organizational<br />
benchmarking. Participants will practice effective project management<br />
techniques important to introducing new products and<br />
analyzing and improving an organization’s processes.<br />
