Noncredit Course<br />
All degree-seeking students are required to complete the noncredit<br />
course UCSP 610 (or 610E) Library Skills for the<br />
Information Age within their first 6 credits <strong>of</strong> study.<br />

Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Information<br />
Technology<br />
The Executive Program for the Master <strong>of</strong> Science (MS) in<br />
information technology is designed to develop the critical competencies<br />
in computer systems management and telecommunications<br />
management needed by senior executives who serve in<br />
the capacity <strong>of</strong> chief information <strong>of</strong>ficer, chief technology <strong>of</strong>ficer,<br />
and other leadership positions where knowledge <strong>of</strong> information<br />
technology (IT) is a critical component. Topics covered<br />
include the role <strong>of</strong> information in decision making, organizational<br />
needs assessment, the relationship <strong>of</strong> an IT strategic plan<br />
to the organizational strategic plan, data communication systems,<br />
computer networks, telecommunication networks, satellite<br />
and wireless systems, use <strong>of</strong> multimedia, management<br />
support systems, and hardware/s<strong>of</strong>tware acquisition. This program<br />
<strong>of</strong>fers the flexibility and convenience <strong>of</strong> a combination <strong>of</strong><br />
on-site and online classes.<br />
Overview<br />
The program consists <strong>of</strong> six 6-credit seminars. Each seminar<br />
includes examinations, papers, and/or presentations.<br />
Program Requirements<br />
In addition to the general admission requirements, applicants<br />
must have a minimum <strong>of</strong> five years <strong>of</strong> business or management<br />
experience and a current position as a mid- or senior-level manager.<br />
Qualified candidates will have a personal interview. All<br />
participants must have access to a computer and the Internet,<br />
and a working knowledge <strong>of</strong> s<strong>of</strong>tware programs as described<br />
on p. 30.<br />
Formats/Locations<br />
All classes in the Executive Program for the MS in information<br />
technology are held at a single UMUC site in the Washington,<br />
D.C., metropolitan area throughout the 18-month program.<br />
The classes are held every other Saturday from 8:30 a.m. to<br />
5 p.m. and are supplemented with UMUC’s online (Webbased)<br />
instruction to provide maximum flexibility and convenience.<br />
Instruction includes lectures, case studies, structured<br />
discussions, guest speakers, videos, computer exercises, written<br />
projects, and oral presentations.<br />

Technical Requirements<br />
All participants are required to have an Internet-ready laptop<br />
computer.<br />
