Master <strong>of</strong> Science in Biotechnology Studies<br />
The Master <strong>of</strong> Science (MS) in biotechnology studies program seeks to provide a thorough<br />
grounding in management and policy issues unique to the biotechnology industry.<br />
Graduates <strong>of</strong> the program, regardless <strong>of</strong> their level <strong>of</strong> prior technical education, will have<br />
a greater grasp <strong>of</strong> the technologies currently in use in the biotechnology industry. They<br />
will understand the regulatory role <strong>of</strong> federal and state governmental agencies as well as<br />
international bodies and pr<strong>of</strong>essional groups. They will also gain a deeper understanding<br />
<strong>of</strong> the “business <strong>of</strong> biotechnology,” including financial, strategic, and human resource<br />
management in the industry. Finally, graduates <strong>of</strong> the MS in biotechnology studies will<br />
have increased knowledge <strong>of</strong> bioinformatics.<br />
Overview<br />
The program leads to an MS in biotechnology studies. The curriculum requires<br />
36 credits <strong>of</strong> coursework and is divided into a 24-credit core and 12 credits <strong>of</strong><br />
electives. A specialty track in bioinformatics practice is available.<br />
Program Requirements<br />
Some background in biology is recommended.<br />
Decision-Pending Status<br />
Students may enroll in BIOT 640 before UMUC has received the <strong>of</strong>ficial transcript<br />
from the bachelor’s-degree-granting institution. Students must receive an admission<br />
decision before subsequent enrollments.<br />
Formats/Locations<br />
Classes in the MS in biotechnology studies are <strong>of</strong>fered online and at <strong>College</strong> Park and<br />
the Shady Grove Center. Students should check the current Graduate Schedule <strong>of</strong> Classes<br />
to determine when courses will be <strong>of</strong>fered at specific locations.<br />
