Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Teaching<br />

The Master <strong>of</strong> Arts in Teaching (MAT) is designed for students who hold a bachelor’s<br />

degree or higher who wish to earn teaching certification. Successful completion <strong>of</strong> the<br />

program entitles a candidate to recommendation for <strong>Maryland</strong> teaching certification at<br />

the secondary level in a specific subject area. Secondary certification options are available<br />

in the following subject areas: biology, chemistry, computer science, earth/space<br />

science, mathematics, physical science, and physics.Phone: 301-985-7056<br />

Overview<br />

The MAT program is a 36-credit program that includes an internship lasting 100 consecutive<br />

school days in a public school setting. The program is available for both full-time<br />

and part-time students. All degree requirements, with the exception <strong>of</strong> the internship,<br />

may be completed at a distance.<br />

Program Requirements<br />

In addition to the general requirements (listed on p. 11), candidates must have either<br />

a baccalaureate degree or evidence <strong>of</strong> a strong background (by having earned a requisite<br />

number <strong>of</strong> credits) in a subject area appropriate for the desired certification. Candidates<br />

must also have a 3.0 GPA overall and in the subject area. An <strong>of</strong>ficial transcript<br />

analysis <strong>of</strong> previous coursework is required for all applicants. Additional undergraduate<br />

coursework in the teaching field may be required to meet certification standards.<br />

Candidates must also pass the state <strong>of</strong> <strong>Maryland</strong>’s requirements on the Praxis I exam<br />

with the following minimum scores on either the Pre-Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Skills Test (PPST)<br />

or the Computer Pre-Pr<strong>of</strong>essional Skills Test (CPPST): 177 in reading, 173 in writing,<br />

177 in mathematics, or 527 total. Candidates who took the computer-based test<br />

before January 2002 must have scored 325 in reading, 319 in writing, 322 in mathematics,<br />

Provisional Status<br />

Provisional admission status for the MAT may be granted to students who fall slightly<br />

below the minimum grade-point requirement for degree status.<br />
