The series<br />

The volumes in this series focus on key issues for <strong>health</strong> <strong>policy</strong>-making in <strong>Europe</strong>. Each<br />

study explores the conceptual background, outcomes <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> lessons learned about the<br />

development of more equitable, more efficient <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> more effective <strong>health</strong> systems<br />

in <strong>Europe</strong>. With this focus, the series seeks to contribute to the evolution of a more<br />

evidence-based approach to <strong>policy</strong> formulation in the <strong>health</strong> sector.<br />

These studies will be import<strong>an</strong>t to all those involved in formulating or evaluating national<br />

<strong>health</strong> policies <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>, in particular, will be of use to <strong>health</strong> <strong>policy</strong>-makers <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> advisers,<br />

who are under increasing pressure to rationalize the structure <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> funding of their <strong>health</strong><br />

system. Academics <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> students in the field of <strong>health</strong> <strong>policy</strong> will also find this series<br />

valuable in seeking to underst<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> better the complex choices that confront the <strong>health</strong><br />

Josep Figueras is the Director of the <strong>Europe</strong><strong>an</strong> Observatory on Health Systems <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Policies,<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Head of the <strong>Europe</strong><strong>an</strong> Centre for Health Policy, World Health Org<strong>an</strong>ization Regional<br />

Office for <strong>Europe</strong>.<br />

Martin McKee is Head of Research Policy <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Head of the London Hub of the <strong>Europe</strong><strong>an</strong><br />

Observatory on Health Systems <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Policies. He is Professor of <strong>Europe</strong><strong>an</strong> Public Health at<br />

the London School of Hygiene & Tropical Medicine as well as a co-director of the School’s<br />

<strong>Europe</strong><strong>an</strong> Centre on Health of Societies in Tr<strong>an</strong>sition.<br />

Elias Mossialos is the Co-director of the <strong>Europe</strong><strong>an</strong> Observatory on Health Systems <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

Policies. He is Bri<strong>an</strong> Abel-Smith Professor in Health Policy, Department of Social Policy,<br />

London School of Economics <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Political Science <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Director of LSE Health.<br />

Richard B. Saltm<strong>an</strong> is Associate Head of Research Policy <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Head of the Atl<strong>an</strong>ta Hub of the<br />

<strong>Europe</strong><strong>an</strong> Observatory on Health Systems <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> Policies. He is Professor of Health Policy<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> M<strong>an</strong>agement at the Rollins School of Public Health, Emory University in Atl<strong>an</strong>ta,<br />

Georgia.
