The mixed economy matrix<br />

A useful starting point for underst<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong>ing the resource base of a mental <strong>health</strong><br />

system <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> its component services is to chart these mixed economies of provision<br />

<strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> fin<strong>an</strong>cing. Cross-classification of the main funding <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong> provider types<br />

generates the matrix representation of Figure 4.2, a simple framework describing<br />

just the broad inter-connections that characterize pluralist care systems <strong><strong>an</strong>d</strong><br />

their constituent tr<strong>an</strong>sactions.<br />

What do the cells of the matrix contain? A relatively straightforward task<br />

for a given country or region – although not attempted here – would be to<br />

locate services (e.g. counselling, inpatient facilities, community nurses, primary<br />
