This might be because approximately one-third of the office was a group meeting area, which was 159
not occupied as often as the personal workstations in the rest of the office. This large area could now be unlit, whereas with the original lighting configuration it couldn’t. The occupational nature of the users also led to some extended periods of under-use of the office during the day. Nonetheless, the most important implication of this savings is that enabling individual lighting control had the tendency of saving significant amounts of energy while improving occupants’ satisfaction working under their preferred lighting. One interesting observation made from comparing Figure 9-13 and Figure 9-14 is that the more often the office was occupied, the more energy savings could be generated. In the hour between 8am and 9am, the power consumption of the research system was almost the same as that of the original all on/off operation, whereas the energy usage was cut by more than a half with the research system during the late morning and the afternoon hours. Aside from the typically unoccupied group meeting area discussed before, the most likely cause of this was the overhead of the mote-based system. Since the motes and the actuation modules were directly powered by the mains and would continue to operate all the time, their energy consumption would also be reflected from the lighting energy usage data and become noticeable, especially when all the lights were off. This observation suggests that better selection of energy efficient components for the actuation modules is necessary to further reduce the operation overhead when it comes to mass production and commercialization. Furthermore, although the impact on power consumption will not be as significant, a better communication protocol could be employed so as to put the motes in a low-power sleep mode as often as possible to reduce the energy draw. 160
