3 Individual company <strong>initiatives</strong> promoting <strong>gender</strong> equality<br />

at the workplace<br />

3.1 Introducti<strong>on</strong><br />

This chapter gives and overview of the <strong>initiatives</strong> fostering <strong>gender</strong> equality at the<br />

workplace as developed and implemented by the 30 <strong>companies</strong> that have been<br />

analysed in the course of this research project. In c<strong>on</strong>trast <strong>to</strong> the n<strong>on</strong>-<strong>legislative</strong><br />

<strong>initiatives</strong> by public and private organisati<strong>on</strong>s, that have been discussed in the previous<br />

chapter, these company <strong>initiatives</strong> have their origin within the company, i. e. they<br />

have been elaborated and implemented by <strong>companies</strong> as a reacti<strong>on</strong> <strong>to</strong> their specific<br />

situati<strong>on</strong>. Nevertheless, some of these company <strong>initiatives</strong> have been reck<strong>on</strong>ed and<br />

h<strong>on</strong>oured by public or private organisati<strong>on</strong> (e. g. have received a prize/award or the<br />

company has achieved a good positi<strong>on</strong> in a company ranking).<br />

By implementing such <strong>gender</strong> equality <strong>initiatives</strong> the <strong>companies</strong> of course adhere <strong>to</strong>,<br />

but also go well bey<strong>on</strong>d <strong>legislative</strong> obligati<strong>on</strong>s. Although <strong>companies</strong> develop their own<br />

approaches <strong>to</strong> react <strong>to</strong> their specific situati<strong>on</strong> of <strong>gender</strong> equality, the <strong>initiatives</strong> that<br />

are described and analysed in this chapter can be transferred between <strong>companies</strong> and<br />

adapted. The analysis revealed that many <strong>companies</strong> with their <strong>initiatives</strong> react <strong>to</strong><br />

similar problems and there are very similar <strong>initiatives</strong> that could be identified in different<br />

<strong>companies</strong>. Obviously, there already is an exchange of ideas that shall be <strong>promote</strong>d<br />

further with this study.<br />

As can be seen from Table 1 below, the focus of this study was <strong>on</strong> multinati<strong>on</strong>al<br />

enterprises (24 <strong>companies</strong>), but 1 large Bulgarian company and 5 SMEs (located in<br />

Austria, Greece, Hungary, Norway, and Spain) have also been investigated c<strong>on</strong>cerning<br />

their practices. These 30 enterprises are active in different industries.<br />
