The encouragement and support of my committee members are greatly appreciated: Dr.
Miles Richardson, Dr. Laura Hensley, Dr. Eugene Kennedy, and Dr. Teresa Summers. I truly
appreciate each of you and your commitment to this research. My committee was a wonderful
group of professionals who guided me and held me accountable to make certain that this
document would be something of which we could all be proud. Thank you for your contributions
to my dissertation and to my personal development.
A special thank you to the Balfour Fellowship Program and to the Founders’ Foundation
of Theta Phi Alpha for providing financial support for this research.
As stated earlier in the Dedication of this dissertation, the love and support of my family
truly gave me the courage to complete this degree and for that I am very thankful.
In addition to my family, I want to thank and acknowledge all those who, along the way,
supported me and never gave up on me. First, God has been the constant foundation in my life.
Without my faith in Him and the community of people that He has continued to send to my life, I
would not have completed this dissertation. There have been so many friends and colleagues who
have been such an important part of this process. When I entered the doctoral program at LSU in
Fall, 1994, I never imagined how this process would impact not only my life, but the lives of
those around me.
One of the areas that had to make the most sacrifice was my staff in the Office of Student
Organizations/Greek Life at Southeastern Louisiana University where I was the Director for ten
years. Thank to Mrs. Fran Dorsa and Mrs. Alice Peltier who made my professional life easier in
order for me to be in the doctoral program and for helping with the many facets of this process.
Thank you both for being patient with me and for encouraging me to continue moving forward.
To the student workers and graduate assistants who worked me throughout the years, thank you
