eggs and green salad followed 20–30 minutes later by a mixture of bread,<br />

legumes, potatoes and pasta.<br />

20.105 On a rare occasion I am forced to break my rule of separating protein and<br />

starch (but I never break the milk-by-itself and fruit-by-itself rules). I can<br />

get away with only minimal “protesting” from my stomach if I mix protein<br />

with potatoes, but to mix protein with grains or legumes is disagreeable.<br />

The age factor<br />

20.106 In my teens I used atrocious combinations by my standards of today, but<br />

still I could be downing something substantial every 2–3 hours. At that time<br />

I could down a heavy breakfast of juice, liver, eggs and cereal, and shortly<br />

afterward get earnest about a milk-based concoction, such as a pint of milk<br />

with lots of yeast and even soya powder stirred in. I would hold my nose<br />

and pour the terrible-tasting stuff down, but my stomach would process it<br />

without complaint. If I was to drink one of those “bombers” today, my stomach<br />

would be in a mess for the rest of the day, and perhaps the following day<br />

too.<br />

20.107 As you age, generally speaking, the sensitivity of your stomach increases. Do<br />

not force your body to try to do what it only could when you were much<br />

younger.<br />

AM and PM foods<br />

20.108 You may find that certain foods are better suited to certain times of the<br />

day. To some extent this may be due to individual habit, but I think there is<br />

more involved. Find what you seem to handle better at certain times of the<br />

day, and schedule your nutritional intake accordingly. For example, I cannot<br />

easily handle solid-food meals (except fruit) other than at breakfast or dinner,<br />

and have not been able to do for many years. During the day I stick to<br />

milk-based drinks, and fruit.<br />

Further enhancement of digestion<br />

20.109 As simple as proper mastication of food is, many people do not chew their<br />

food adequately before swallowing it. Always chew your food until it is a<br />

complete paste, prior to swallowing.<br />
