accepts suppressed demand for methods
employed in the voluntary market. These
methods apply to biomass using cook stoves
amongst others.
Likewise similar approaches by EEDSM
approaches at a National level could make
both carbon, energy and demand reduction
methods coincide, reducing the transaction
costs of both. A reduction in these transaction
costs would imply a greater contribution to the
capital and maintenance costs of clean energy
technologies and practices.
The space heating example explained here
is the first of a number of applications of
suppressed demand. Applications to water
heating, lighting, cooking, etc. can all be
developed and applied, as could broader
applications to rural energisation, for example.
The National Sustainable Settlements Facility
(NSSF) provides an optimum place to coordinate
the blending of energy/demand
and emissions reduction interest as the
Development Bank of Southern Africa is
already a conduit for the public financing of
municipal infrastructure including settlements.

Using the calibrated model for houses with ceilings and ceiling insulation, the amount of energy
required to reach thermal comfort without ceilings for the heating season can be predicted.
The calibrated model has been validated (internally) against real thermal performance data. A
graphical representation of the calibrated model predictions against the real data is presented below.
